Stage 1 - November 7: Time trials

South Africa dominates time trials

South African cyclists dominated the individual time trial events on Day 1 of the 2008 African Cycling Championships in Casablanca, Morocco on Friday.

South African Under-23 time trial champion, Jay Thomson, secured the gold medal in the men's 22km individual time trial in a quick 28 minutes and 10 seconds. Thomson's compatriot and the 2007 champion, Nicholas White, finished second with Namibian Dan Craven securing the bronze medal.

In the women's event, held over 11km, South Africa's Cashandra Slingerland continued with her best year yet when she won the gold medal in 15 minutes and 28 seconds. South African time trial champion, Marissa van der Merwe claimed the silver medal with Aurelie Halbwachs of Mauritius rounding out the podium.

"I was happy with my ride, hoping to have had a chance to win, but Jay (Thomson) has progressed well this year in the time trail, and was the deserved winner," said the ever-modest White. "There is still another race on Sunday, and we will have our work cut out for us, with many other full-complement teams to race against!"

The road race events will take place in Casablanca on Sunday with the men racing 143km and the women 55km.
