Kroon repeats at Henninger

Dutchman shows he can win in any kind of weather

CSC's Karsten Kroon repeated his 2004 victory when he out-sprinted his final eight breakaway companions on the tough, slightly uphill, finishing straight in Frankfurt. The 32 year-old Dutchman was launched to the line by his team-mate Andy Schleck, while Italy's Davide Rebellin came just short of victory, scoring a second place. Colombia's Mauricio Ardila Cano of Rabobank had a great day and ended up in third.

Kroon admitted, "Andy and I set it up for me to sprint, as the finish suited me." For him, the win was different from four years ago, as back then "the weather was horrible; we got away with 20 guys very early and then eventually we were five." Of course to some degree it was similar today, even though the weather was very nice most of the day, except for a few showers. A 21-man break got away after 100 kilometres, and since it contained the majority of the Gerolsteiner team the race was pretty much sealed.

Eventually, only nine men survived, with CSC and Gerolsteiner having two riders each. As the front group entered the final 4.5-kilometre loop, which was to be done three times, the gap was a comfortable 90 seconds over the bunch and the group was working well together to arrive all together for the final dash to the line.

Rebellin was a bit disappointed with his sprint and acknowledged, "Kroon is really strong. We had some bad luck with the crash, but Gerolsteiner did a very good race." The Gerolsteiner captain still had Wegmann with him, but realised that "Fabian had a hard time attacking off the front in the finishing laps. Schleck was controlling the group very well, so we decided to put our cards in the sprint."

It was Ardila's second time at Henninger's race and was impressed with it. "It's a beautiful race and a good spectacle for everyone," the winner of the 2004 Tour of Britain commented. He was content with his day in Germany. "Third, that's a great result for me. It gives me a lot of confidence for the Giro, which is my primary goal for this season," the Colombian told Cyclingnews after the finish. He rode well in the break, but admitted that "it was tough in the finish, with strong riders like Kroon or Rebellin."

Crowd favourite Steffen Wesemann, who was born in Germany, but now rides with a Swiss license, fought his way back to the group after being dropped at the Mammolshainer Weg and got seventh. He revealed, "September will be my last race." He was happy with the outcome, although he told Cyclingnews that "The podium would have been better."

The early part was dominated by a break of Johannes Fröhlinger (Gerolsteiner) and Albert Timmer (Skil-Shimano), who was surprised the peloton "didn't give us more of a gap." But winning the mountains prize was a good consolation for the Dutch rider, who has featured in several breakaways lately, including the Scheldeprijs and the Amstel Gold Race. "Yes, I am feeling well. I will take a break now."

Race organiser Bernd Moos-Achenbach is very hopeful that he will find another sponsor, so the race can continue in 2009. With 16 races going on it is one of the events that makes junior and amateur racing a big mainstay among the professional event. For now, the organisation is 250,000 euro short of putting on the Henninger Turm next year.

The riders took to the roads around Frankfurt, Germany, promptly at 10:12, under partly cloudy skies. It might be May Day, but spring is slow in arriving in Europe, so the riders all wore long sleeves or even jackets in the 12°.

The neutralization was long – 17 kilometres – and it took until 10:50 when 1961 World Champion Rudi Altig finally waved the flag to get the race underway. Attacks came right away and Björn Papstein of the German Continental team 3C Gruppe got away. The peloton kept a close eye on him, though and he was never able to get more than about 30 seconds.

On the first climb of the day, the Eppstein with a gradient of up to 19%, Gerolsteiner's Peter Wrolich and Sebastian Lang went in pursuit of Papstein. They were caught before the summit, though.

After coming over the top, Papstein was caught and the next group formed, a 14-man group with representatives of Gerolsteiner, Milram and High Road, among others. Finally, Fröhlinger and Albert Timmer of Skil-Shimano broke away. The rest were absorbed back into the peloton, while those two made their way on alone.

The field was content to let them get away, and the two youngsters (both of whom turn 23 next month) quickly built up a lead of over three minutes. Their sharing was simple – Timmer got the mountain points, Fröhlinger the sprints.

The peloton woke up again with about 116 kilometres to go. Various groups tried their luck, unsuccessfully, and the leaders' advantage dropped to under two minutes.

Finally five riders were able to build up a small lead over the peloton: Dmitry Kozontchouk and Bram Tankink of Rabobank, William Bonnet (Crédit Agricole), Wrolich (Gerolsteiner) and Dirk Müller of Team Sparkasse. Fröhlinger and Timmer's lead dropped to about a minute.

The long climb up the Billtahlhöhe ripped the peloton apart, with Gerolsteiner's Stefan Schumacher being caught in a group towards the rear. The leading duo crossed the top first, but the peloton was only some 39 seconds behind them. The followers all came together again, though.

Steffen Wesemann of Cycle Collstrop and Gerolsteiner's Wrolich got a slight lead on the peloton and were the first to overtake Fröhlinger and Timmer with about 100 kilometres to go. The peloton caught them all within minutes.

Timmer was able to shoot out and take the points at the sixth categorised mountain ranking, the Ruppertshainer Berg. This secured the mountains classification for him for the day. He wasn't ready to give up and pulled away on the descent. In addition, the first raindrops appeared, never a welcoming sign. It proved to be only a short shower, fortunately, and the sun came out again. On the descent, a car that mysteriously got on the course and was parked in a sharp right hander almost caused havoc.

Timmer was unable to hold on to his lead, and the peloton pulled apart again. Gerolsteiner was much to be seen near the front, particularly Davide Rebellin and German Champion Fabian Wegmann.

A loosely organised group of initially 21 riders got a small lead. Eventually, the group consisted of Fabian Wegmann, Andrea Moletta, Ronny Scholz and Davide Rebellin (Gerolsteiner), Bram Tanking, Mauricio Ardila Cano and Dimitri Kozontchuk (Rabobank), Stéphane Goubert (AG2R La Mondiale), Steffen Wesemann (Cycle Collstrop), Björn Glasner (Kuota Senges), Florian Stalder und Andreas Dietziker (Team Volksbank), Andy Schleck und Karsten Kroon (Team CSC), Robert Retschke (Mapei-Heizomat), Nicolas Roche (Crédit Agricole), Christian Knees (Team Milram) and Paul Voss (3C Gruppe). It worked together well enough that it built up a sizeable lead over the peloton.

Team High Road missed the cut, so it led the chase. Michael Barry, André Greipel and Andreas Klier set the pace, hoping to pull things back together for young sprinter Gerald Ciolek. The advantage had gone up to two minutes, but with 60 kilometres to go it was down to about 1'15".

Gerolsteiner lost an important helper in the escape group when Andrea Moletta crashed on a corner. It took a long time for the Italian to decide to keep on going, and the peloton was just passing by when he climbed back on his bike. The team later reported that while his back was little sore, he was able to continue.

With 25 kilometres to go, the leading group had shrunk to nine riders, with two each from Gerolsteiner (Davide Rebellin and Fabian Wegmann) and CSC (Andy Schleck and Karsten Kroon). The others were Steffen Wesemann (Cycle Collstrop), Björn Glasner (Kuota Senges), Mauricio Ardila Cano (Rabobank), Nicolas Roche (Crédit Agricole) and Christian Knees (Team Milram). Their lead over the peloton was 1'44".

The lead was 1'51" at 19 kilometres remaining, but the peloton hadn't given up hope and by kilometre 15 it was down to 1'35". The leaders crossed the finish line for the first time and the chasing peloton came over about 1'20" back.

With eight kilometres to go, the gap was still over one minute. A few riders attempted to break out of the following group, but the momentum was gone.

The leaders finally realised they weren't going to be caught, and the attacks out of the group started. Rebellin and Schleck were the most active, with Milram's Christian Knees taking a turn, too. After that first series of attempts, the group stayed together to the last kilometre, with Schleck doing much of the lead work.

The sprint was every man for himself, with Kroon proving to have the best legs, ahead of Rebellin and Rabobank's Mauricio Ardila Cano. The peloton came in 1'10" later.
