Richardson wins, O'Loughlin punctures, McCann holds on

David McCann became the first rider in this year's FBD Insurance Rás to successfully defend the yellow jersey, finishing in the main bunch at the end of the tough 141-kilometre stage to Skibereen.
The Ireland rider was one of 80 who crossed the line one minute and 41 seconds behind the day's winner Simon Richardson, who in turn was approximately 20 seconds ahead of Mayo's David O'Loughlin (Ireland Pezula Racing). O'Loughlin was looking certain to fight it out for the stage win but punctured inside the final three kilometres.
He was ultimately given the same finishing time as Richardson, thanks to UCI rules governing mechanical problems that close to the end of a stage, but lost out on the opportunity of taking his second Rás stage win.
He, Richardson, Patrick Kos (Netherlands) and Kit Gilham (Britain Kinesis) went clear before Farranfore, the first of five climbs on the stage. They opened up a maximum lead of four minutes 45 seconds over the main bunch and showed great strength in fending off efforts to chase behind. While the gap did narrow towards the finish, Richardson and O'Loughlin had enough left in the tank to press on ahead and to finish over a minute clear.
"It was a beautiful stage, I loved every minute of it," said the Englishman afterwards. "It was super hard because of the wind and the climbs themselves. I knew that with the time gaps we had, I was possibly looking at yellow at the end of today, so I gave it everything.
"It was super unfortunate that David punctured at the end…it is not the best way to win a stage, off the back of someone else's misfortune." He said that O'Loughlin was strong and admitted it would have been tough to have won.
O'Loughlin got a spare bike but didn't have enough time to get back to the front. "I drilled it hard as soon as I got the bike change," he said. "I was closing on him but I just did not have enough road at the end so I sort of gave up in the last few hundred metres. Obviously I am very disappointed."

Richardson had started the day well placed overall and so was clearly a concern to McCann. However, he finished 54 seconds off the yellow jersey, moving up to sixth overall but still needing more time. He's likely to try again in the remaining three days, but 2004 Rás winner McCann is relatively confident.
"I was not too concerned when the break went away. In some ways it might suit me to have another guy from a different team close behind but not leading. I was not really that worried when the time went up because I was pretty confident we could bring it back when we needed to."
There is likely to be a big showdown on Saturday. He feels up to the task. "Those are the hills where I have won the Rás before – all around the Wicklow Mountains. I have won stages there and I have won the Shay Elliott, so this is my racing territory. I am looking forward to those hills."
Before then, the riders will face a mainly flat 180 kilometre stage to Clonmel. It's likely that more attacks will come along those roads, ensuring another tough day for the defending Ireland team.

- Stage 5 of the 2008 FBD Insurance Rás travelled south from Tralee in County Kerry to Skibbereen in County Cork. With six categorized climbs en route and thunderstorms forecast, there was an air of trepidation as the race headed into the wilds of the southwest.
- A prototype titanium model of team car was unveiled before the start. It bore a strong resemblance to a Model T Ford. Henry Ford’s family lived in Ballinascarthy, County Cork before immigrating to America.
- To host a Rás stage finish is quite an event in for a town in rural Ireland and a big turn of fans of all ages is guaranteed. This gentleman picked an excellent vantage point just behind the finish line.

- The luck of the Irish was not in today. Irish Road Race Champion David O’Loughlin (Ireland Pezula Racing Team) suffered an exceptionally cruel fate when he punctured with 3 kilometres to go and lost contact with Simon Richardson (Britain Plowman Craven).
- O’Loughlin’s disappointment was palpable as he crossed the finishing line. The crowd had hope for an Irish victor on the stage but unfortunately it was not to be.
- Mateusz Komar (Poland National Team) slipped past Ciaran Power (Ireland Pezula Racing Team) to take third place on the stage and lead home a group of eighty riders.
