Day 1 - June 28: Time trials: Elite Men, Women (September 19)

(Races postponed to September)

Young men and experienced women win in Austrian time trials

By Susan Westemeyer

Stefan Denifl and Christiane Soeder won the Austrian time trial championships, building a contrast between youth and experience.

Denifl, who turns 20 years old on September 20, was one of four U-23 riders in the top six of the men's race. He needed 39:14 to cover the 28.4-kilometre course, finishing 13 seconds ahead of Josef Benetseder. Third was Matthias Brändle, only two-tenths of a second out of second.

For Soeder, it was her sixth national title. She has four time trial titles in her palmarès now and two road titles, and she will ride in both disciplines in the Worlds next week. She covered the 24.6-kilometre course in 35:47, beating second-place finisher Monika Schachl by 3:42 minutes. Daniela Pintarelli was third.
