Ricardo Escuela (Successful Living) claimed the final stage victory in a field sprint ahead of Sean Milne (Team Type 1) and Ted King (Bissell). The Argentinean sprinter placed third in the previous stage four criterium, but was successful in his quest to go two better on today's final stage.

"My team Successful Living work really hard in the last five kilometres," said Escuela. "There was a second small group of riders off the front in the last few kilometres, after the KOM hill, but my team-mates helped to bring it all back together so that I could sprint."

United States of America champion Levi Leipheimer (Astana) claimed the 2008 Cascade Cycling Classic overall victory. Leipheimer, who isn't racing the Tour de France after his team was left off the roster for this year's event, claimed victory by 2'30" over Jeff Louder (BMC), who was a further three seconds ahead of his team-mate Darren Lill.

"I didn't have to worry about anything because Chris Horner is a master at this," said Leipheimer, who attributed his over all victory to his solitary team-mate.

"It's a team sport and we were at the mercy of everyone once we moved into the lead," continued Leipheimer. "Chris and I have been doing this a long time and we know how to form alliances - it paid off."

Leipheimer, a podium finisher at last year's Tour, was delighted to win the yellow jersey in Bend. "To win this race is definitely something to be proud of," he said. "When I first started out as a professional this race was the thing to do and I'm proud to be on the list of people who have won it, like Lance Armstrong.

"In fact, I believe the year after Lance won Cascade, he won the Tour de France so maybe the same thing will happen to me," added Leipheimer.

BMC's runner-up riders Louder and Lill expressed their appreciation for the amount of work their team-mates put forward. The team worked at the front of the peloton to hold a significant break-away at a two-minute margin.

"I think this was a stage where the team really grew a lot," said Louder. "They did 98 percent of the effort today, full responsibility because we had a lot to ride for today."

The professional men's field started the 138-kilometre, five-lap circuit race with a series of attacks that resulted in several unsuccessful breakaways. Astana's Horner spent his energy patrolling the front of the field until the right mix of non-threatening riders formed a separation.

The 12 rider breakaway included Tim Johnson and Kyle Gritters (Health Net-Maxxis), Justin England (Toyota-United), Omer Kem (Bissell), Chris Jones (Team Type 1), Rolf Eisinger (Legacy), Ian McKissick (BMC), Allen Krughoff (Rio Grande), Will Routley (Symmetrics), Tyler Wren (Colavita-Sutter Home) and Jonathan McCarty (Garmin-Chipotle).

BMC organized its full team at the front of the field, protecting its general classification riders by setting a tempo that held the breakaway at a safe two minute advantage.

Jones picked up points during the KOM sprints to move into second place in the climber's competition, one point behind his team-mate Moises Aldape.

"I am really happy to get this jersey here," said Aldape, who took the classification lead his stage win on Stage 5.

Michael Grabinger (Successful Living) spent nearly two laps dangling in front of the peloton at a one minute advantage while trying to make it across to the front group. The BMC team reeled him back into the field at the end of the third lap.

The 12 riders worked well together and maintained a solid separation for more than 100 kilometres, nearly four circuits before being reabsorbed into the peloton with 14-kilometres to go.

"Levi attacked over the last KOM and Botero and Louder went with him," said Lill. "But, it was a tough end to the race with a lot of attacking and we had to finish off all the hard work that our team did for us."

A combination of effort from Successful Living, Team Type 1, Toyota-United, HealthNet-Maxis and Bissell brought the strong riders back to the group. Ted King attacked over the last riser with two kilometres to go and eight riders followed.

Several small groups formed and then reconnected with one kilometre to the line. "I tired to get a jump on the guys coming out of the corner because King is fast and Escuela is very fast," said Milne. "I had a gap but Escuela was in my draft and came around me."

Rais wins break sprint, Armstrong seals overall win

Amber Rais (Tibco) claimed her second consecutive victory in the Awbrey Butte circuit race after a two up sprint against the overall race winner Kristin Armstrong (Cervelo-LifeForce). Gina Grain (Webcor) won the field sprint for third place, capturing her third podium of the week.

"I wanted to be patient on the first lap so that I could stay with the leaders on the KOM," said Rais, who bridged across to Armstrong on the second lap. "We nailed it for two laps and she definitely pushed more than I did. Sitting on Armstrong is like sitting on a motorbike."

Armstrong claimed the 2008 Cascade Cycling Classic overall victory over Christine Thorburn (Webcor) and Julie Beveridge (Aaron's), her second victory since the Nature Valley Grand Prix last month.

"I knew there was a Tibco rider behind me and she is a motor so why not," said Armstrong, who admitted she waited for Rais to bridge across before pushing full gas. "My initial thought was to split the field a little bit so that the other teams wouldn't have so many players, when you're out here by yourself, that's all you can do is eliminate as many people as possible."

Armstrong's victory also marks the end of a training block in preparation for the Olympic Games next month in Beijing, China. "I think this is a really great last preparation race for Beijing, great with a lot of climbing and at altitude," said Armstrong.

"Nature Valley was great for my leg speed and to get the idea of racing back in my head. But, this race brought the threshold up a notch with all the climbing," added Armstrong. "This was a great block of training for me and I'm looking forward to going home and take a little bit of a break and do my final tune up - I think I've done everything I can."

With the top two places already spoken for, Gina Grain (Webcor) capitalized on the fast descent into the finish, winning the bunch sprint for third place.

"I felt great this week," said Grain, on her way to Beijing for the Olympic points race. "I never thought coming into a race like this, with so much climbing, that I'd have been on the podium three times - I guess coming into a race, you never know what will happen."

The 28 kilometre circuit race wore down the professional women's field, climbing over two significant ascents per lap, totaling 115-kilometres.

"It was a really hard race today and I felt horrible even at the start," said Beveridge, who depended on her Aaron's team-mates to keep her protected.

Armstrong set a fast tempo up the first KOM ascent, a tactic to try to thin out the field. However the race leader continued to put pressure on the field until she found herself alone at the top.

"I saw that Kristin had a gap toward the top so I jumped to go after her and no one came with me," said Rais. "I was between the field and her for a while but once I found her wheel we worked together to extend our lead."

Aaron's charged behind the break away riders, initially trying to close the time gap. However with Armstrong over two minutes ahead on the general classification and Rais 14 minutes back, neither presented a threat to the second or third place on general classification.

Thorburn protected her second place in the overall classification by sitting close to Beveridge. Beveridge tried to attack several times over the steep KOM along Archie Briggs road.

"Every time I gained a few seconds over Christine Thorburn, her team brought it back," said Beveridge. "So I think in the end we needed to hold out third place."

Team Webcor won the overall team general classification based on their strength and consistency in over the six stages. "Our number one goals today were to protect our second place on the general classification and to win the overall team general classification," said Webcor director Laura Charmeda.
