Cortes loses sprinter's jersey, but takes stage win

Canadian Phil Cortes won the sixth stage of the Vuelta a Costa Rica into Guápiles. After 150 kilometres the Team Tourdequebec.com rider beat Cuban Pedro Sibila (Mapache - Greatwall) and Mexican Carlos Lopez (Canel's Turbo - Mayordomo) in a three-man sprint. Cortes' stage win made up for the disappointment of losing the lead in the intermediate sprints classification. The red jersey of the best intermediate sprint rider was taken over by Adonis Cardoso, who won all three metas volantes of the day.

The break of the day established a large gap after the peloton was slowed in an unlit tunnel. A crash due to lack of visibility had caused confusion in the bunch. The leader in the young rider competition was involved in the crash and the peloton took the rest of the descent easy. The break had four minutes at the bottom of the climb.

The three riders who had gotten away were Cardoso, Sibila and Lopez. They had only a lead of 38 seconds at the second sprint, after 99 km. But only Tourdequebec.com was interested in chasing the break down. They couldn't do it by themselves and the gap grew to two minutes. Cortes then decided to bridge solo. After 30 kilometres of chasing he joined the trio.

Despite the long chase, things were made easier by the break, according to Cortes. "The riders in the break were informed about the situation and I was surprised that they stopped riding hard. After I joined them, we worked together well and we rode at a higher pace."

Cardoso was dropped in the end and three riders arrived at the flamme rouge. "The rider I feared the most [Cardoso] couldn't follow the pace in the final. I launched my sprint with 500m to go. It is my first victory as a professional – it is incredible."

Cortes trails Cardoso by two points in the sprints' classification and hopes to get the jersey back. "That would be a bonus; the stage victory is already a great satisfaction and a nice Christmas present."
