Melbourne Commonwealth Games track gold medallist Sean Finning (Jayco/VIS) displayed his all-round talent with a resounding victory in the third stage of the Timbercorp Tour of the Murray River today. The Bendigo-based Finning was involved in a three-man breakaway in the early section of the 33 kilometre Kerang criterium and maintained the advantage to score narrowly from Dylan Newell (Praties) and Craig McCartney (Savings and Loans).

Newell, the Victorian 100 kilometre champion, initiated the break and was soon joined by Finning and McCartney who crashed twice in yesterday's rough opening conditions. The trio established a 22-second lead on the peloton with some intelligent co-operative tactics even though they were all representing different teams: Finning, Newell and McCartney.

The rampaging peloton threatened to claim the leaders in the last of 30 laps, with Kyle Marwood (Dixon Homes), Nathan Clarke (Praties) and Bernard Sulzberger (Virgin Blue) just failing in the sprint to the line.

Overall leader David Kemp (Virgin Blue) was back in 12th place and retained the Timbercorp jersey by 40-seconds from Sulzberger, with Leigh Howard 10-seconds further back in third place.

Finning lost more than 14 minutes in yesterday's opening criterium in Echuca and the Stage 2 contest from Moama to Barham. Newell surrendered more than 22 minutes and McCartney nearly 25 minutes.

"I had a terrible day yesterday and hopefully I can now keep going and get a stage win," Newell said.

Newell was awarded the most aggressive rider prize for his daring early tactics in the Kerang criterium.
