Kemp takes the first leg

Queenslander David Kemp defied atrocious conditions to create history in the opening stage of the Timbercorp Tour of the Murray River today The Virgin Blue rider bolted clear at the start of the 25.5km criterium on Echuca's riverfront to win the stage by six seconds from Geelong's Leigh Howard and Tasmanian Bernard Sulzberger.
Along the way, Kemp won all of the 11 intermediate sprints and captured all four category jerseys – most aggressive, criterium, sprint and tour leader. It was the first time this feat had been achieved in the 13 years of the Murray River tour.
The stage, raced over 30 laps of a spectacular 850-metre riverfront circuit, was conducted in incredibly greasy conditions following steady rain over the previous 18 hours. Twenty seven riders crashed in the field of 86. None were seriously injured. Kemp, Victorian open road champion in 2006, escaped the carnage with his daring tactics and at one stage lead by 44 seconds.
"There's only one person I trust in those conditions and that's me," he said. As Kemp prepared to tackle the 113km afternoon stage from Moama to Barham, he quipped: "I've got four jerseys to wear this afternoon to keep me warm."
Kemp leads the tour by 33 seconds from his Virgin Blue teammate Sulzberger after Stage 1. Howard, riding for the Victorian Institute of Sport, was a further six seconds away in third place. West Australian Benjamin King also enjoyed a productive day. He finished 19th in the criterium.
