Schmitt sweeps the field and cleans up for Bissell

Morgan Schmitt (Bissell Pro Cycling) attacked on the final assent of the day and managed to hold off the remnants of a nine man breakaway which included the likes of Tom Soladay (Time Pro Cycling) and Karl Menzies (Health Net-Maxxis) to win the second day of the Marion Classic.
Schmitt crossed the line solo after the large breakaway was cut down to three before he dropped his two remaining breakaway companions on the final lap to secure a solo victory.
"The break went on a prime lap, there were about eight or nine guys in there" said Schmitt. "I had a teammate Graham Howard with me who worked whilst I sat on, I usually do well on a hilly course so I knew I was the guy for the team. With five to go Graham hit it, about six guys followed including myself. From there I attacked with four to go and was only followed by Tom Soladay and Jonathon Jacobs (MOB Squad). I just kept hitting it on the hill each time and managed to crack them on the final lap".
The riverside town of Marion, Indiana, north of Indianapolis provided a course which featured a steep uphill and a hair-raising downhill that proved selective all day. Schmitt's attack with four laps to go proved very selective for the break which sat up at a critical point of the race. This gave Bissell their second win for the weekend and a healthy purse to take back to Michigan. But this was not the only racing fans were watching. Karl Menzies completed a successful comeback to racing after making the break today.
"It was a tough course," said Menzies. "That hill was a block headwind and a crosswind up the top, I got worked over a bit and didn't have much left toward the end."
Though Menzies was a marked man in the break, and still unable to sprint with his left wrist heavily strapped, he appears to be on track for Tour of Missouri later in the year.
