A sick Petacchi wins in Antalya, Garcia Dapena stays in yellow

Alessandro Petacchi took another stage win in Turkey when he fought down Maximiliano Richeze Ariel of CSF Group Navigare and Benfica's Javier Benitez Pomares in Antalya. The stage offered the riders an unforgettable journey with a permanent scenic view on the coast of the gulf of Antalya, where Alexander the Great, the most famous emperor of the Antique world, used to install his winter headquarters, precisely in Phaselis. That was at the half way into the route leading the riders to the town of Antalya, where Alessandro "Il Grande" Petacchi was able to repeat his stage one victory.
The top sprinter from Milram received the honours in his usual cool demeanour, seemingly never expressing any joy when he scores. His apparent sadness wasn't because of his Milram train having derailed once again en route to the finishing line. "The two times I've won a stage in this race and also yesterday, there has been a breakaway and my guys have been bravely riding behind," Petacchi said in defence to his team-mates who disappeared in the crucial last five kilometers.
"At the end I did my own thing and I profited from the train of CSF-Navigare," he continued. "[Alberto] Ongarato closed the gap to [Matteo] Priamo. It's not fair what the Navigare team did today. They've been winning for three days in a row and they stayed on our wheels all day today. They let us do all the work without lending a hand."
As he described the stage, Petacchi was coughing, sometimes badly. Apparently he hasn't fully recovered from the flu he sustained at Milano-Sanremo and the warm weather in Turkey wasn't enough to get rid of the asthma that obliged him to take ventolin last year at the Tour of Italy. That's how he went positive for salbutamol. He still awaits a final decision from the prosecutor of CONI before the end of April regarding a possible sanction, due to the high dose of the substance found in his analysis.

"I hope I'll be able to breathe better tomorrow for the last stage of the Tour of Turkey," he commented. "Tomorrow is another day. I'm happy with two stage wins already. I got the first one after consultation of the photo-finish and I wanted to win in a better way. I've succeeded to do that."
Race leader David Garcia Dapena was happy with Petacchi's stage win. "It will motivate him for doing it again tomorrow," the smiling Spaniard said. "Therefore, his team will probably do most of the work again. We put some riders [to the front] to help them as much as we could today. That's one more day, or, let's say it's one day less before the conclusion."
The Karpin-Galicia rider looks like having the situation under full control, with only one stage left in the Tour of Turkey.

Nine men took off after just 12 kilometers: Rubens Bertogliati (Saunier Duval), Aitor Perez (Extremadura), Dominique Cornu (Silence-Lotto), Andrey Zeits (Astana), Danilo Hondo (Serramenti PVC-Diquigiovanni), Martin Mares (PSK Whirlpool), Sander Oostlander (Dutch national team), Mindaugas Striska (Mitsubishi-Jartazi), Der Zolt (Centri della Calzatura-Partizan).
They got a maximum lead of three minutes, but the teams Lampre and Milram didn't repeat the same mistake as the day before. They rode hard early enough to bring them back, which they did with 28 kilometers to go.
Benoît Joachim (Astana), Manuel Belletti (Serramenti PVC-Diquigiovanni), Mirco Lorenzetto (Lampre) and Paul Van Schalen (Dutch National Team) tried to escape from the bunch with no success. Ruslan Ivanov (Serramenti PVC-Diquigiovanni), Enrique Salgueiro (Extremadura) and Nebojsa Jovanovic (Cosmote) had more luck. They created a gap of eight seconds with 20 kilometres to go. They reached an advantage of 13 seconds but they got brought back with 10 kilometres to go.
A bunch sprint was inevitable. Milram looked to control the situation until Astana and later CSF-Navigare took the first positions of the bunch. Matteo Priamo (CSF) tried to surprise the sprinters but Alberto Ongarato was prompt to take Alessandro Petacchi back onto Priamo's wheel. Petacchi easily won the sprint by two bike lengths.
David Garcia Dapena (Karpin-Galicia) maintained the yellow jersey.
