Sunny skies greet competitors at 7th 'Journo Worlds'
The seventh Mondial de la Presse (journalists world championships) were held in Austria's beautiful SalzburgerLand region between September 21-22. Almost 100 journalists competed in time trials and road races across four categories over the two days. Those who had any legs left rode the Eddy Merckx Classic cyclosportif the day after. Eddy Merckx himself was on hand to present all the jerseys and trophies.
The entire weekend was blessed by sunny and warm weather, a welcome change from the wet summer.

The under 35 and 36-50 men's categories rode the same course for the time trial, a 22.7km anticlockwise loop around the Wallersee between Henndorf and Seekirchen. It was a hilly, technical and at times dangerous course due to the traffic through the towns and junctions.
The under 35 men's event went to Austrian Martin Ganglberger who clocked 31'58 to beat Belgian Frederik Backelandt by 52 seconds and another Austrian Martin Bihounek by 57 seconds. The 35-50 men's category was a tighter affair, with Dutchman Roel van Schalen (Hup Hup Holland) setting the fastest time of the day - 31'34 - to beat Jeff Jones (Procycling) by less than five seconds. Italian Giovanni Fantozza took the bronze in 31'58, a time that was only fractions of a second slower than the winner of the under 35 event.
The over 50s and women rode a shorter 12.5km loop that started in Neumarkt and ended in Seekirchen. The lack of technical sections saw some fast times done, with Maurizio Marogna (Italy) winning the over 50 event in 16'31 ahead of German Gerhard Hack (Die Schwarzwälder) and Austrian Hans Unterguggenberger. The women's race saw defending champion and local Brigitte Krebs (Team Österreich) again finish on top of the podium, with her time of 18'08 giving her a 34 second victory over Samantha Profumo (Italia Uno) and 1'11 over Germany's Marion Schlegel.
Road races

All the road races were held on a mostly flat 13.5km circuit around the Obertrumer See, starting and finishing in Obertrum. A roundabout with 500m to go followed by a corner at 200m meant that a rider who had the right amount of guts would win a bunch sprint.
The under 35s event was a tame affair, and had the lowest average speed of all four categories. The lack of speed in the opening laps meant that four riders from the 35-50 race, which had started five minutes behind, caught them. The attacks were generally limited to the small climb with 3km to go, but no-one could get away. After five laps ( 67.5km), the race was decided in a bunch sprint with Rene Bauer (Team Österreich) getting a jump on the rest on the roundabout, with last year's runner-up Kasimir den Hertog (HDC Media) finishing second again and Frederik Lerch in third.
The 35-50 men's race was over four laps (54km). After a slow first lap, TT winner Roel van Schalen shook things up with an attack through the start/finish. After the bunch regrouped, one of the French riders crashed, and in the confusion Austrian Erich Del Pozo ( 2Radchaoten.com) and Italian Eros Maccioni slipped off the front. The pair quickly gained 40 seconds and were riding away as most of the bunch seemed not to notice that they had gone.
At the halfway point of the second lap, Jeff Jones set off in pursuit taking Slovenian Robert Baumann with him. They got to within 10 seconds at the end of the lap, but the leading pair had now caught the under 35 bunch ahead. Jones and Baumann took another half a lap to catch the bunch, meaning there were now four riders in contention. Behind the leaders, Van Schalen had launched a counter attack along with compatriot Erwin Bak, Brit Julian Bray and Slovenian Miroslav Cveticanin. But they had left it too late and were unable to close the gap.
On the final lap, the four leaders worked together on the front of the bunch, their task made easier by the lack of aggression in the under 35 ranks. Over the last four kilometres, Jones attacked three times and Del Pozo once, but each time Maccioni and Baumann were able to mark them. The sprint was slightly marred by one of the under 35s getting into third position at the roundabout and then swinging off, leaving Maccioni and Del Pozo with an unbeatable advantage. Del Pozo looked to have had it won until he stopped sprinting and started celebrating with 20m to go, allowing Maccioni to come around him to take a clear win. Jones followed them home for third place with Baumann in fourth.
The over 50s road race was held in conjunction with the women's. Time trial runner-up Gerhard Hack soloed off the front on the first of three laps and was never seen again. He took the win by nearly a minute over Dutchman Karel Verdonschot and Austrian Hans Unterguggenberger. The winner of the last three editions of this race, Peter de Groot, was a slightly frustrated fourth.

The women's race saw Brigitte Krebs add yet another world journo title to her palmares, this time beating Jana Kabrtova (Czech Republic) and Marion Schlegel (Germany) in a bunch sprint.
For the first time, there was also a team prize which was based on the best results of three-rider teams. The winning team was Team Österreich, with Krebs and Bauer combining with Otto Sibera to beat the Belgian national team (Frederik Backelandt, Dieter Roman and Rik Lintermans) and the mixed nationality Die Schwarzwälder trio (Gerhard Hack, Karel Verdonschot, Karl Rupp).
At the end of the prize giving ceremony, AIJC (international cycling journalists association) president Robert Jansen announced that next year's Mondial de la Presse is in Limoges, France, while the city of Kranj in Slovenia is a prime candidate in 2009.
