Stage 1 - May 3: Australian Junior and Oceania Individual Time Trial Championships

Local takes out Oceania title

In perfect conditions Queensland's Hayden Josefski took victory in the Oceania Time Trial Championship race. The Under 23 rider, who has four Australian track championship silver medals to his name, cruised home some 19 seconds ahead of Elite Men's rider Cameron Wurf (Hobart Wheelers) on the 41.5 kilometre course.

Former Australian World Road Championships team member David Pell (Bendigo & District CC) was the third rider to cross the finish line in the event, held at Black Rocks estate in Queensland.

"The weather was perfect, and the whole event ran very smoothly," commented Cycling Queensland event manager Haylie Lack. "This level of competition means the standard is very high, which made it exciting for the athletes and spectators alike."

In the Oceania Elite Women's Time Trial championship race Canberra's Vicki Whitelaw took out the event. Barcelona Olympic road race gold medallist Kathryn Watt finished in second place with reigning Australian Time Trial Champion Carla Ryan coming home in third place, some 56 seconds behind Whitelaw.

The Under 19 Men's race was claimed by Rohan Dennis (Adelaide Cycle Club), who rolled home 15 seconds ahead of second place Jack Bobridge (Norwood Cycle Club) with Dale Scarfe (Norwood Cycle Club) taking third a further four seconds behind.

Meanwhile Australian Junior World Track team member Josephine Tomic dominated the Under 19 women's race, claiming victory some 22 seconds ahead of New Zealand rival Rachel Mercer. Mercer, the 2006 New Zealand U19 Road Time Trial Champion, was some 52 seconds quicker than third placed Lauren Kitchen (Port Macquarie).

"We are now looking forward to the road race events which will be on Saturday and Sunday," added Lack.

This weekend's races will be based at Max Boyd Park in South Murwillumbah and commence at 8:30am on both days.
