Stage 5 - June 23: ,

Gandara takes stage sprint, Hekman retains yellow

Jaime Gandara (Colavita/New Mexico) scored an opportunistic sprint victory in Stage 5 of the Tour of Ohio. A solid finish in the main bunch means Mark Hekman (Abercrombie and Fitch) retains the yellow leader's jersey.

Stage 5 rolled out of the town of Yellow Springs, which today mourns the closing of hometown Antioch College, and commenced over an 11 mile loop which featured a short, steep climb for each of the four laps. Although the climb was difficult, it proved too short to cause a break amongst the 127 riders who appeared on the start line. The rest of the course was pancake flat, which allowed many riders caught behind splits on the climb to get back on terms and allowed nothing more than speculative forays off the front.

The pace of the race was fast, averaging 26 miles per hour for the whole stage. Abercrombie and Fitch sat on the front, protecting the lead of its team leader Hekman, and conspired to bring everything back to set up a sprint finish - tailor made for its yellow clad criterium ace.

But a long straight line to the finish proved to be puzzling for the A&F warriors as it lost control of the pack. As the melee commenced, many riders misjudged the efforts of some riders and faltered well before the line. Gandara, however, managed to ride the right wave and turbo boosted past the rest of the field, leaving open air between his bike and that of second place rider Molly Cameron (Organic Athletes).

Gandara surely will savor his victory having ridden well throughout the tour, despite suffering from cramps and bad luck throughout. His sprint victory was well taken and richly deserved. Cameron's second place time bonus proved adequate consolation as it launched him to fourth place overall.

The tour concludes tomorrow in a fast, flat criterium in Springfield that must have Hekman and his Abercrombie lieutenants licking their chops in anticipation.
