Rock racing rocks Superweek

The Rock Racing team did not arrive at Superweek for the first weekend, choosing instead to contest the elite nationals in Pennsylvania. However, the team has stormed into the middle of the series, earning valuable NRC points and pocketing some decent cash along the way. Yesterday, elite national criterium champion Kayle Leo Grande made the break and took the win. Today, Leo Grande was again in the break, but with a younger teammate, Sergio Hernandez. The two played the tactics right and the new pro Hernandez attacked the break with three laps to go, and out-sprinted Jeffrey Schroetlin (ABD Cycling Team) for the win.

"I attacked with three to go and the ABD guy was the only one to go with me," said Hernandez. "I worked for a lap but then sat on because I had Kayle behind. But Leo Grande was doing the same thing to the riders remaining in the break, which had lost a strong rider in Andy Crater (Wheel & Sprocket) to a late race mechanical.

Brian Jensen (HRRC/Trek) leads yesterday's winner

Crater, an early series and points leader may have lost the chance to climb back up the overall towards leader Brian Jensen (HRRC/Trek), but thanks to winning the intermediate sprints, regains his lead in that race.

The technical .8 mile course had numerous tight turns which, when combined with fast speeds, resulted in numerous gaps forming from the first lap. Two race neutralizations due to serious crashes helped some riders stay in the race longer. However, eventually only 56 riders were left on course half-way through the race.

"I was in the break that lapped the field multiple times yesterday," said Leo Grande. "I was hoping I could give it to Sergio, spread the wealth around a little."

Series leader Jensen only arrived at Superweek on Monday, but took over the lead in just five races, though is not eyeing the overall. "I am here for the NRC points," he said.

The racing continues Sunday with a new race in Evanston, Illinois, a northern suburb of Chicago with another fast and technical course.
