Dekker wins, Mosquera takes over at top

Dutch rider Thomas Dekker showed his form is good prior to the defence of his Tirreno-Adriatico title when he won the third stage of the Challenge Volta a Mallorca today, the Trofeo Pollença.
Dekker, Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel), Alberto Fernández de la Puebla (Saunier Duval-Prodir) and Ezequiel Mosquera (Karpin-Galicia) broke clear of the peloton on the day's final climb, the second category Al Mirador des Colomer, with the 22 year old Rabobank rider then dropping his three companions before the line.
Overnight leader José Joaquín Rojas (Caisse d'Epargne) crashed on the final ascent and had to change his bike, finishing 1'43 back in 52nd place. Mosquera finished the day as best rider in the general classification, with Dekker not figuring as he missed the first day of racing. The Spaniard will start tomorrow on the same time as Gusev and De La Puebla.
Rojas was disappointed but resolved to go for a stage victory in two day's time. "I suffered in the first climb and even had some cramps, but I recovered in the final part of the stage. In the final climb, I was ahead but at approximately one and a half kilometres from the line I collided with another rider while going around a bend. I crashed and as a consequence I broke my gears.
"I had to change my bike and that meant the end of my hopes for today. However I will rest tomorrow and be back for the last stage in order to try to win it."
Caisse d'Epargne's hopes will now transfer to Luis León Sánchez who was fifth today and is now fourth overall, five seconds back. "I felt very well during most of the stage, but I lacked some force in the final part," he said. "As a consequence I was not able to fight for the stage win.
"It is true that I am very well placed in the general classification now, but I think we have to wait and see what will happen tomorrow before thinking of winning the Challenge Mallorca."
How it unfolded
200 riders lined out for the third stage of the Challenge Volta a Mallorca, facing a tough day in the saddle with one first category climb and two second cats. The weather was sunny at the start in Pollença and warmed up to approximately twenty degrees during the early afternoon, prompting some good racing.
Eighteen kilometres into the race eleven riders went clear, namely Pablo Lastras (Caisse d'Epargne), Carlos Barredo (Quickstep), Bert Grabsch (T-Mobile Team), Christian Knees (Team Milram), Alessandro Spezialetti (Liquigas), Tomas Vaitkus (Discovery Chanel), Juan Jose Cobo (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Andoni Aranaga (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Tom Stamsnijder (Gerolsteiner), Joaquin Sobrino (Relax-Gam) and Juan Jose Oroz (Orbea). Vaitkus beat Sobrino and Aranaga to take the Meta Volantes sprint eight kilometres later in Sa Pobla, and the group reached their maximum advantage of 4'04 by kilometre 57.
Vaitkus took the next Meta Volantes sprint in Bunyola, leading Sobrino and Grabsch across the line. The peloton had carved almost a minute off their lead by this point and the likelihood of their being caught increased when Vaitkus, Aranaga, Stamsnijder y Sobrino were dropped on the second category Col de Soller. The peloton was just 1'50 behind the seven remaining riders at the top, with Spezialetti first across the line.
After a quick descent the riders raced onto the lower slopes of the day's next climb, the first category Puig Major. Some of those in the first break had slipped back at this point, leaving just Lastras, Barredo, Knees, Spezialetti and Oroz from that early move, while seven others had bridged across, making it twelve at the head of affairs. These additions were Stijn Devolder, Alberto Contador (Discovery Chanel), Alberto Fernández (Saunier Duval-Prodir), Juan Manuel Gárate (Quickstep), José A. Redondo (Astana), Jorge Ferrio (Andalucía-Cajasur) and Josu Mondelo (Extremadura-Spiuk). Ferrio, Devolder and Mondelo led the group over the top, with Joaquin Rodriguez (Caisse d'Epargne) having bridged across from the fragmenting peloton.
Gárate then went clear on the descent and by kilometre 131 the former Spanish champion was the only one left ahead of the main bunch, 20" clear. Twelve kilometres later, he was joined by seven others, namely Francisco Mancebo (Relax-Gam), Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Marcus Burghardt (T-Mobile Team), José Luis Rubiera (Discovery Chanel), Christian Knees (Milram), yesterday's winner Vicente Reynés (Caisse d'Epargne) and Aitor Hernández (Euskaltel-Euskadi). The next group was 1'30" back at this point but had got back on terms ten kilometres later, making it all square starting the final climb up to the line.
Here Dekker, Gusev, Fernández and Mosquera thundered clear and fought it out for the stage win between then, with León Sánchez and David De La Fuente (Saunier Duval-Prodir) seven and ten seconds back respectively. Mosquera's better placings on the two preceding stages saw him move to the fore and he will lead the race going into tomorrow's fourth stage, the hilly 164.3 kilometres from Sóller to Port de Sóller. He will face four second category climbs en route to the finish; Can Costa (17.7 km), two ascents of the Coll de sa Batalla (km 71.4 and km 131.7) and then the reverse side of Puig Major (148.2 km).
