Petacchi has Milan-San Remo form...at last

The stars of the classics have shown up in stage four of the Tour of Algarve. Every kind: Alessandro Petacchi, the man who has made Milan-San Remo an obsession for himself, won the stage and too over the lead from Bernhard Eisel; Philippe Gilbert who aims for the Flemish one-day races, moved up in fifth position today after breaking away; Davide Rebellin, the only man to have won the triple crown of the Ardennes (Amstel Gold Race, Flèche Wallonne, and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2004), was a valuable runner-up on the finishing line of Loulé.
"At some stage during the race, I spoke with Tom Steels in the bunch and he said today's course was similar to Liège-Bastogne-Liège's," Petacchi revealed. He was right. "Although I don't know much of Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Today it was very nervous with a lot of climbs, for which the 21 or the 23 gear was needed. Winning such a race in front of Rebellin makes me think that my condition is really good. I've been in this kind of shape before but what I enjoy now is that day after day, I feel better and better."
The Ligurian knows little of Liège-Bastogne-Liège but Rebellin doesn't have to worry about him: Petacchi is not going to switch to the classics formatted for climbers. Although he likes to remember that he was the king of the mountain in the 1999 Tour de Langkawi, something that means a lot for whoever has climbed Genting Highlands, but the work done for becoming one of the world's top sprinters has changed him physically in such way that his climbing abilities are limited now.

"Today was the equivalent of Liège-Bastogne-Liège on a short distance," he said. "A classic is something different. There are attacks all day. For sure I don't have the characteristics for the Ardennes. My mind is set on Milan-San Remo only. No other race can motivate me as much as this one. As soon as I won it, I wanted to win it again. Only somebody who has won it can feel how great it is."
"Milan-San Remo requires a lot of work before," Petacchi continued. "I've done it. Also, the choice of doing the Tour of Qatar has given me the pedaling rhythm I needed for performing the way I did today. Usually, I started my season at the Tour of Andalucia. Had I followed the same habits, the Tour of Algarve would have been my first race, but I'm ready to take on the overall win. I came here for winning. To make it, I'll have to win the last stage as well. No race is won before the end but I have the right team-mates for controlling the situation."
The end of the last stage is flat enough for expecting another bunch sprint, with more than 23 riders as it was the case in Loulé. So it will be hard for Rebellin to give Gerolsteiner their season's first win, although he's got the legs for that after riding aggressively for two days in a row. Gilbert should also be happy with what he has done. "I was among the last riders to stay with the front group," the Belgian said. "I attacked for the stage win with 3.5km to go but I got caught quickly. Finishing fifth in such a hard stage is an encouraging sign. I still had energy for the sprint, it makes me happy."
How it unfolded

After 34 kilometers, 10 riders broke clear: Steve Cummings and Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel), Wim van Huffel (Predictor-Lotto), Matthias Kessler (Astana), Hubert Schwab (Quick Step), Patrick Sinkewitz (T-Mobile), Christophe Mengin (Française des Jeux), Stefan Schumacher (Gerolsteiner), Sébastien Minard and Nick Nuyens (Cofidis). They covered 44.6 km in the first hour.
Van Huffel was first at the top of Cerro de San Miguel, a third category climb, at km 47. Markus Eichler (Unibet.com) who was in between the breakaway and the bunch was brought back at kilometer 54 where the advantage of the 10 leaders was 1:47. Xavier Volpini (LA MSS) and Gilberto Martins (Madeinox) attacked from the peloton and rejoined the front of the race at kilometer 72 as the gap reached 4:20. Portuguese teams Liberty Seguros and Benfica drove the bunch.
Van Huffel and Martins competed for the mountain prices but the advantage of the 12 leaders kept decreasing. Cummings was the only one to insist.
With 30km to go, the Englishman had 34 seconds advantage on counter-attackers Fabrizio Guidi (Barloworld) and Fernando Sousa who is from the Madeinox team based in Loulé where the stage finish was located. But the bunch was never further than one minute behind Cummings who was caught with 10km to go, just before the top of the Montanha em Picota where Antonio Colom (Astana) was first. The bunch was split in three and the yellow jersey Bernhard Eisel (T-Mobile) was the second group.
Colom was chased down by Gerolsteiner, which showed the intentions of Davide Rebellin. Vladimir Gusev (Discovery Channel) launched a strong solo attack with less than five kilometres to go, Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux) tried as well but Petacchi's guardian angels Fabio Sacchi and Marco Velo made sure the first group would be back together for the finish. There were two lengths of a bike between Petacchi and Rebellin on the line.
