Klöden gets the win by two seconds over Wiggins

After winning Tirreno-Adriatico, Andreas Klöden has put his mark on another stage race as he claimed the individual time trial at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Angers. He beat out pursuit world champion Bradley Wiggins by a small margin of two seconds, making the Englishman deeply disappointed.
The German won at a high level, considering the history of this time trial on the same 8.8km course in Angers, in the Loire valley, where the Grand Prix des Nations used to be held. The winners of the stage against the clock in the 2005 and 2006 Circuit de la Sarthe, Florent Brard and Ivan Basso respectively, both scored 10.33, which would have placed them in 7th position this year, behind Française des Jeux' time trial hope Matthieu Ladagnous. Klöden rode 19 seconds faster than his predecessors and 10 seconds faster than Sylvain Chavanel who had won the same stage in 2003.
The nice and sunny conditions favored the performance, but Klöden is definitely in a great shape early this year. "I've been in good health all winter," he commented. "My results also have to do with being in a new team where we have a lot of fun. It gives me a good morale. I'm on the right path to the Tour de France."
In July, he'll have to pair with Alexandre Vinokourov who is proud to see his Astana team winning these days. It'll give the group built around Kazakh the biggest motivation for the Tour de France. Half of the team lined up in the Circuit de la Sarthe will also ride the Tour of Italy. It means that Paolo Savoldelli, Eddy Mazzoleni and Maxim Gourov should be in a sufficient shape already for backing Klöden during the last two stages of the Circuit de la Sarthe. The remaining stages are quite complicated, and include an uphill finish at the Belvedere. Current manager of Crédit Agricole Roger Legeay was the winner the last time the race stopped there in 1980.
"I haven't studied tomorrow's course yet, but we'll try to control the race although it's not easy with only six riders per team", Klöden added. His directeur sportif Giovanni Fidanza said, "We'll do our best for winning the overall but without spending too much." On the roads where he began to cycle more than 20 years ago, the veteran of the peloton Laurent Brochard will try and bring Bouygues Telecom their first win of the year, but it will be hard for anyone to take over from Klöden.
