Steegmans not the only Quick-Step sprinter
Paolini extends his lead ahead of final time trial

The short morning stage with start and finish in De Panne was just up Gert Steegmans' alley; the Belgian of Quick-Step beat yesterday's winner Daniele Bennati (Lampre) in a bunch sprint. Luca Paolini extended his lead by grabbing three bonus seconds during the stage making it clear he'll do his very best in the final time trial in the afternoon.
Steegmans claimed his third win of the season after winning a bunch sprint in the Volta ao Algarve stage one and the team time trial in Qatar.
"Yesterday, I didn't feel well and I thought my form was gone, that's why I didn't take part in the bunch sprint. Today, I wanted to compare myself against the sprinters and it worked out well, my form's still there," the Boonen look-a-like explained. "Steven [De Jongh] was supposed to deliver me in front but I lost his wheel, luckily Wouter [Weylandt] took over perfectly.
"I'm feeling good although I wanted to feel like this a week earlier, I planned to be good in Dwars door Vlaanderen," Steegmans continued. Sunday, he will work for Boonen and Bettini; Boonen didn't start in today's stage but that didn't come as a surprise to Steegmans. "We knew that already two weeks ago."

Yesterday, Nico Mattan (DFL-Cyclingnews) said that a bunch sprint was inevitable but he did try his best to avoid it. "This morning I said to Eric [Vanderaerden] that I would try something but it's hard against ten men; anyway, it was a good day," Mattan said.
His compatriot in the ultimate breakaway was Andy Cappelle (Landbouwkrediet), who was more than happy that he could show himself today. "I live about 200 metres away from here, that motivates me to show myself. Without guys like us there's nothing to see in a stage like this," Cappelle said.

Seven men tried to avoid a bunch sprint: Belgian champion Niko Eeckhout (Chocolade Jacques), Wim De Vocht (Predictor), Christian Murro (Tenax), Sven Nevens (Jartazi), Ralf Grabsch (Milram), Christophe Mengin (Française Des Jeux) and Elio Aggiano (Tinkoff). They weren't allowed to ride away further than two minutes ahead of the peloton and with twenty kilometres to go it was clear they wouldn't make it to the finish line. 'Rambo' Eeckhout tried to get away on his own but with ten kilometres to go everybody was back together.
Passing the finish line for the first time the bonus seconds were grabbed by Paolini before Ballan; this way Paolini was able to extend his lead on Ballan up to 10" seconds while putting other TT specialists like Posthuma and Roesems at an additional three seconds.
With five kilometres to go Koen De Kort (Astana) attacked the peloton but he was without kick when a trio passed him. Mattan, Cappelle and Matteo Priamo (Panaria) managed a gap of about 15" but guys like Fabio Baldato of Lampre didn't let them get too far.
In the last kilometre Priamo tried to make it on his own but he couldn't fight up against the fresh sprinters. Steegmans was leading on the small cobbles in the city centre and Bennati couldn't come out of his wheel.
