Non-Americans reign in Atlanta's 10km Classic

by Mark Zalewski, North American Editor

Hoppy flys to 10(0)km Classic win

The 10km Classic race in Atlanta on Labour Day has to be the strangest race on the National Racing Calendar. For one, it plays second fiddle to what the name of the race is for -- the 10km running race which is touted as the biggest in the country. The pro men actually race 100km. And to further show that running is the focus, all the races start in the seven o'Clock hour... in the A.M. Ouch. Finally, the parcours itself is rather unconventional, with rolling hills and power climbs that end in a scary-fast downhill to the finish line. This year, Jeff Hopkins (Jittery Joe's) flew to the finish at more than 80kph to take the win.

"That's the best field they have ever had there," said Hoppy who has raced this event the past five years. "It's pretty much all of the foreigners that weren't allowed to race in Greenville and the smaller teams that popped down here." Hoppy is referring to the USPRO road championships that excluded non-American racers for the first time and took place the day before.

The race was fast from the start with riders looking to either earn some final money out of the $25,000 purse or help their racing resume as the season comes to a close. "The whole race there were attacks going the whole time, back and forth," said Hopkins. "With two to go a group of twenty went and we ended up in it with four, including me. I latched on to all the attacks that went out of that group. Evan [Elkin] punched it chasing dudes so it was all together at the top of the hill with 800 meters to go."

Last year's winner Emile Abraham (AEG-Toshiba-JetNetwork) was in a prime position to win again, but Hopkins marked his wheel. "Emile won it last year, so I followed him the whole way. It's a massive downhill to the finish and you come in about 80k per hour. So you have to time and just right -- I hit 82kph into the dip at the line!"
