Surprising all, Sergio Marinangeli (Naturino-Sapore di Mare) jumped at 500 meters to go to claim the 10th Gran Premio Bruno Beghelli. In Monteveglio (Bologna), the 26 year-old Italian, after many placings throughout the season, secured his first win of the 2006 season. Following on the heels of Marinangeli were Italians Ruggero Marzoli (Lampre-Fondital) and Riccardo Riccò (Saunier Duval-Prodir).

The 207 kilometre race started to get serious at kilometre 55. It was then that a group of 15 formed off the front of the peloton: Serge Baguet (Quick-Step), Martin Pedersen (CSC), Matej Mugerli (Liquigas), Johannes Fröhlinger and Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner), Marc De Maar and William Walker (Rabobank), Eddy Ratti (Naturino-Sapore di Mare), Julio Pérez (Panaria-Navigare), Alessandro Bertuola (Tenax-Salmilano), Maurizio Varini (Ceramica Flaminia), Tommaso Caneschi (Miche), Roberto Traficante (Team LPR), Enrico Degano (Barloworld) and Hannes Blank (Team Lamonta).

The move gained a maximum of 2'50 at kilometre 147 but this was reduced over the final eight circuits of Zapponino. Each 13.3km circuit contained a 5km climb, and it was on these climbs that the group rid itself of Pedersen, De Maar, Caneschi, Traficante and Degano.

The remnants looked weary; Eddy Ratti struck out with 15 kilometres remaining. Starting the final circuit with 0'26, the Italian's move destroyed the break and setup for his teammate's win.

Ratti, caught with four kilometres to go, was pleased to see Marinangeli go by with a small, compact group. The 26 year-old forced the final selection with 500 meters, before out sprinting Italians Marzoli and Riccò, followed by German Danilo Hondo (Team Lamonta).
