Marzio Bruseghin, just five days after his 32nd birthday, has won the first race of his nine year career as a professional bike racer. And he won a big one: the Italian National Time Trial Championship.

Bruseghin conquered the 37 km course in a time of 44.22, beating last year's champion Marco Pinotti by 15 seconds. Manuel Quinziato took third place, 41 seconds behind. At the first time check (11.8 km), Bruseghin held a seven second advantage over Pinotti. At 26 km, that advantage had disappeared and the two were even on time. Bruseghin then sped on to victory averaging 51km/h and taking back 15 seconds.

Bruseghin said he believed he could win today, and had even placed a bottle of Prosecco in the refridgerator before heading off to race this morning.

The Lampre rider known as 'Bruse' has worked hard as a domestique his entire career, most notably for Alessandro Petacchi at Fassa Bortolo, and now for Damiano Cunego at Lampre. In the Giro d'Italia, he placed an excruciatingly close second to Stefan Schumacher in the 18th stage. Bruseghin said of his first win, "Sincerely, the fact that a victory had never come to me was never an obsession, but now I don't want to stop. I have to win a stage on the line so that I can raise my arms."

Perhaps best of all, Bruseghin will sport his new "tricolore" jersey of green, white, and red at the Tour de France prologue, which Bruseghin described as "a great honour."
