Gran Premio SBS - NE

Mottarone, Italy, June 2, 2006

Basso still in great form

By Gianmarco Cilli

Ivan Basso (CSC) has dominated the field in the Gran Premio SBS, a 14.5km mountain time trial scaling the Mottarone (elevation 1450m). The Giro winner showed that he is still in incredible form, crushing second place Damiano Cunego by 1'24.

Even more impressive was that Basso set a new record for the climb with an average speed of 23.006km/h. The previous holder of the Mottarone record was none other than Basso's feuding partner of late, Gilberto Simoni, who won the race in 2004. Basso shattered Simoni's record by 1'14. Gibo did not participate in this year's race.
