Day 2 - July 7: U23 women & juniors criteriums

Shirock, Salon win junior criterium titles

By Andy Lee, USA Cycling

Lauren Shirock (Emmaus, Pa. / South Mountain Cycles) and Peter Salon (Brooklyn, N.Y. / GS Mengoni) claimed the junior women's and men's 17-18 criterium titles Friday at the 2006 USA Cycling National Festival at Seven Springs.

Raced at the Jennerstown Speedway, a track known more for its NASCAR racing than bicycle racing, the U23 women, and junior men and women wound through a 1-kilometer loop as nine national titles were awarded on day two of the national festival.

Halfway through the junior women's 17-18 race, the field of 12 riders was whittled down to eight. Eventually a group of four riders broke away with eight laps left in the 25-lap contest. Though two riders in that pack - Thursday's time trial champion Jacquelyn Crowell (Maitland, Fl. / Colavita) and Arielle Filberti (Worcester, Mass. / Hot Tubes Development) - exchanged attacks throughout the contest, it was Shirock's jump in the final meters that won her the race.

"I just waited until the end and sprinted right through the finish," said Shirock, who remained tucked and with her head down well after crossing the finish line. "I sprinted right after the turn and kept on going and just hoped the other riders wouldn't pass me."

Filiberti finished second and Amara Boursaw (Stanwood, Wash. / Greggs/Trek) finished third.

USA Cycling Junior Development rider Salon won the junior men's 17-18 criterium in dominating fashion. Five laps into the 50-lap contest, Salon, Stephen DeLisle (Gloucester, Va. / Hilton Cycling/Contes) and Anton Blake (Davis, Calif. / Davis Bike Club) broke away from the peloton, building a 25-second gap just 14 laps into the race. Though several chase groups developed, they were quickly absorbed by the peloton. Salon, DeLisle and Blake, however, stayed close together and continued to grow their gap until five laps remained. With three laps left, the trio held a 10-second gap on the only chase rider. It wasn't until after the trio crossed the start/finish line to begin their final lap that Salon made his move.

"I attacked early and it was just a random attack - nothing special - then all of a sudden I was by myself with two other guys and we started working together, built up the lead, and it stayed pretty much the same the whole race," Salon said of his early jump. "Towards the end, the peloton was really closing in on us so we had to work hard to make sure we stayed away. The last couple of laps, I saw the peloton was really, really coming in fast and when I checked, both of the guys I was with were dead and I just wanted go so I attacked and it worked."

Blake finished second and DeLisle finished in third. Cody O'Reilly (Santa Barbara, Calif. / Echelon Santa Barbara), a participant in USA Cycling's Junior Camps this spring claimed the last spot on the podium in fifth.

In other criterium events held Friday, Erica Allar (Fogelsville, Pa./ Team Fuji) won the espoir U-23 women's category, Karla Lopez (El Paso, Texas / Major Motion) won the junior women 10-12, John Funk (Topeka, Kan. / GP Velotek) won the junior men 10-12, Justin Koelbl (Fairfax Station, Va. / Warrenton Cycling Racing Team) won the junior men 10-14, Coryn Rivera (Tustin, Calif. / Major Motion) won the junior women 13-14, Colleen Hayduk (Kutztown, Pa. / Team Fuji/Salamander Racing) won the junior women 15-16 and Iggy Silva (San Diego, Calif. / Eddie B Racing) won the junior men 15-16.

The USA Cycling National Festival continues Saturday with the elite men's and elite women's/Under-23 women's road races.
