Stage 2 - July 8 : Otto Grunski Time Warner Menasha Classic Criterium, Menasha, WI, 100 km

Late Breakaway Nets Win In Menasha

Breaking away is the classic method for winning a bicycle race, but tonight at the Otto Grunski Time Warner Menasha Classic an early four-rider breakaway suffered the peril of breaking away too early. The foursome, which included yellow-jersey wearer Christian Valenzuela, appeared close to lapping the large international field at one point but they were unable to close the gap and were eventually caught by two chasers, Frank Travieso of Cuba (AEG-Toshiba) and Swedish rider Stefan Adamsson (Team Milram).

Shortly thereafter Valenzuela and John Puffer (ABD Cycling Team) were dropped from the break. The reconstituted break continued to the finish but Travieso, sprinted to the win before 15,000 enthusiastic fans, narrowly defeating Jamiel Danesh (RHVlla.com/Montano Velo), Adamsson, and Todd Yezefski (Nerac/Outdoorlights.com).

In an unusual occurrence, the wearers of the yellow overall and red sprint competition jerseys before the race swapped them at the post-race awards ceremony. Hayden Godfrey (Team Monex) won the field sprint for fifth place and is now the overall leader of the series. Christian Valenzuela benefitted from his presence in the early break to capture enough points to take the lead in the Waterford Sprint Competition.
