Attacking racing from the gun at Ride For Life

By John Kenny

In windy and wet conditions, the pace was on from the start in the major races at the Trust Ride for Life in Sydney's Centennial Park on Saturday, with Joe McDonnell (FRF Couriers-Excelpro) winning the Elite race and becoming Sydney Champion.

Jose Rodriguez (Clarence Street) signalled his intentions from the start of the Elite/Under 23/Under 19 race by launching an attack that saw around half the bunch chasing fruitlessly by the end of the first lap. One of the early casualties, Matt Lucas (Randwick Botany) said, "The pace was on from the gun, Jose [Rodriguez] attacked and half the bunch got dropped, never to get on." The bunch split further when Rodriguez attacked again on lap five, which led to the establishment of the winning 15-man break.

Rodriguez was making much of the pace at the front, along with McDonnell and his FRF Couriers-Excelpro team-mates Troy Glennan and Josh Marden. Also featuring strongly were Nick Woods (Randwick Botany), Brad Mills and Dave Treacy (both North Sydney-Mace-Up and Go). The under-19 riders Dale Scarfe (Central Coast) and Tim Guy (Bathurst) made the selection.

McDonnell made his winning move with seven laps to go and was joined by Treacy on the short climb to the Paddington gates. The two worked well together and both riders had the luxury of team support from behind to mark all the attempts to chase, "There were too many teams and I was on my own," said Rodriguez. "There were two North Sydney riders and three FRF riders marking the moves. I chased hard but couldn't quite get across."

The hard-luck story of the day came from Marden, who had attacked the break and was making ground on the two leaders. He crashed when his handlebars got caught up in some stray barrier tape with three laps to go, "It was so windy out there, the tape just caught my 'bars and I came down. I wasn't chasing that hard [with team-mate McDonnell further ahead] but I was trying to hang on to third place."

At the bell, the two leaders had 20 seconds and were still sharing the work. Rodriguez attacked for the final time on the hill with Troy Glennan attempting to get on his wheel. Rodriguez's chase was to no avail, although he stayed clear for third place, and the two leaders sprinted it out, with McDonnell winning easily, "The plan was for me and Troy [Glennan] to attack and keep Josh [Marden] fresh for the sprint. It worked out perfectly in the end," said McDonnell.

Treacy was elated with his second place, "I haven't been doing that much training so I'm really happy. Joe [McDonnell] and I looked after each other on the climb and shared the work," he said. "I've been doing some motor pacing with [fiancé] Melissa, which has helped my speed. I also made the right choice today by riding TWE carbon wheels, which were perfect in the windy and wet conditions."

In the under-19 race, Scarfe beat Guy and Jason Tomlinson to take the title, "It was tough out there. I knew that if I stayed with the big boys then I could get a result," said Scarfe. In the under-23 race Jackson-Leigh Rathbone (Penrith Panthers CC) held on to beat Jim Moore (Sutherland Shire CC).

Masters/Women's race - 35 km

The earlier masters and women's combined race was run in the worst conditions of the day with wind and heavy rain throughout the 12-lap race. The Eastern Suburbs club had the largest contingent of riders in the race and they dominated proceedings.

There were attacks from the outset from the Easts riders John Kenny, John Peppard, Nick Whyman and Warrick Edwards. On the fifth lap Kenny attacked on the climb and stayed away for the win. Anthony Spurgeon (Caravello) took the sprint for second from a fast-finishing Peppard.

Leonie Aisbett (Illawarra CC) had a great ride to win the women's race from Renee Fortunata (Sutherland CC). Aisbett was at the front of the race from the start and chased many of the early attacks.
