Moriarty wins stage two time trial

2004 TQ International winner Louise Moriarty began what she hoped will be the start of a successful fightback when she won the stage two time trial in the TQ Paper International 2 day this afternoon. Moriarty recorded a time of 2 minutes 40.81 seconds for the 2 kilometre time trial, finishing 2.69 seconds ahead of her Ireland team-mate Julie O’Hagan and 5.25 up on promising young Irish rider Mary Brennan (Castelbar/T.F Hotels). Stage one winner Maxime Groenewegen (WV Alcmaria Victrix/Plusine ICT - Netherlands) was next, 6.11 seconds back, with another Ireland rider, Jenny Fay, taking fifth.
A trio of Dutchwomen took three out of the next four places, Elisabeth Bramm (WV Alcmaria Victrix/Plusine ICT - Netherlands) and Linda Ringlever (Weijers Eijkhout Movingladies Groenewoud – Netherlands) racing to sixth and seventh and Jessica Glasbergen (WV Alcmaria Victrix/Plusine ICT – Netherlands) taking ninth. Welshwoman Kirsten Brooks (Albergavenny R C Bikebase/Govilon Garage) was eighth and Colette Swift (Team Ireland) rounded out the top ten.
The first two places in the overall classification remain unchanged with Groenewegen continuing to lead from Braam. O’Hagan jumps from fifth to third while Ringlever goes from sixth to fourth. Roxanne Knetemann (WV Alcmaria Victrix/Plusine ICT- Netherlands) drops two places to fifth, and Liane Gaffron (RG Charlottenburg Berlin - Germany) goes from fourth to thirteenth. Moriarty’s TT win brings her up to sixth overall but she remains over a minute and a half in arrears, making a repeat victory in the race a very tough task.
“I’m very happy to win the time trial,” she said. “I was unlucky this morning to puncture at a crucial moment, but my legs didn’t feel great anyway. I think I needed this morning’s race to bring them around…I felt much stronger during the time trial.”
