92nd Giro del Piemonte - 1.HCItaly, October 13, 20052004 Results Results Past winners Fischer strikes againBrazilian fast man Murilo Fischer (Naturino-Sapore di Mare) has triumphed in another bunch sprint in Italy, this time winning the 92nd Giro del Piemonte. The 26 year-old had a clear margin over Steven de Jongh (Rabobank) and Paride Grillo (Panaria), who filled out the other podium placings. "It's an important victory: I was missing a classic win this year," said Fischer. "The team was crucial, in the finale they piloted me as I wanted. I still have acceptable condition, certainly after the World's I could have called it quits but instead I'm still here to win: this is a mark of my responsibility and reliability. "I don't believe I have a big chance to win the Giro di Lombardia. The parcours is not suited to my characteristics, but I will try and I'll start with the objective of doing well and to finish off with a good result." How it unfoldedThe start of the 176 km race was given at 10:42am by the Mayor of Asti, Vittorio Voglino, and sports assistant Giuseppe Passirono. 155 riders from 20 teams set off from the Place Campo del Palio d'Asti and the pace was rapid. The peloton stayed together for the first hour and averaged 43.3 km/h On the first climb of the day en route to Camo, seven riders succeeded in escaping near the top: Alejandro Valverde, Ivan Gutierrez (Illes Balears), Emanuele Sella (Panaria), Oscar Sevilla (T-Mobile), Carlos Sastre (CSC), Koos Moerenhout (Davitamon-Lotto) and Andriy Grivko (Domina Vacanze). The group cooperated well and by km 76, it had 1'53 on the peloton that was led by Lampre and Naturino. The average speed remained almost the same after two hours: 43.2 km/h. The gap didn't grow too much, and reached 2'25 by km 121 in Cherasco, as the peloton maintained a tight control over the situation. After three hours, the average was 42.1 km/h. On the climb of La Morra, the chase picked up, and by Novello (km 135), the gap was down to 1'40. Once it was down to a minute, Sella decided to attack on the Manforte d'Alba climb, taking Moerenhout, Gutierrez and Grivko with him. The four leaders had 15 seconds with 10 km to go, and although Sella tried to go alone at 8 km to go, the peloton swept everyone up. In the finale, Fischer was too good for De Jongh and Grillo, with Alberto Ongarato (Fassa) and Alejandro Alberto Borrajo (Panaria) rounding out the top five.
