Wood moves up

As predicted, the wind played a bit part in today's stage of Tour de L'Aude, where the consistent Aussie, Oenone Wood (Nurnberger), took the stage in a bunch sprint. Predictions of rain however were incorrect as riders enjoyed a warm 25-degree day for their stage one.
As is relatively normal for the first stage of a big race, the day was fairly uneventful and the strong cross headwind convinced riders to save their energy. A few attacks were attempted, but nothing got very far and the bunch arrived back in Lezignan Corbières with 80 riders in tact after 114km of racing. It was also obvious that the Nurnberger team wanted to keep the race together for a bunch sprint at the end.
Apart from one persistently long uphill drag, that is not steep but is about 20km in length, the stage was quite flat, but it was the strong crosswind that made it a very tough day. It was also not overly technical except for the final kilometer, which consisted of a few sharp turns. Sprinters needed to be in position well before the red banner. Wood managed to negotiate the best position and took the sprint from Sarah Düster (German National Team) and Marina Jaunatre (French National Team), her win moving her up the general classification ladder from ninth into third, but Christine Soeder (Univega) keeps the leaders jersey after her prologue win yesterday.
Cyclingnews caught up with Wood after the stage, who said "the stage was really hard today and the bunch was very hectic. It was great to win such s difficult stage and its fantastic for the team to have a good start to the tour," she added."
Tomorrow is another stage that has a good chance of finishing in a bunch sprint. If Nurnberger want to take the leaders jersey at this point in the race, they'll be going for another stage win to take the time bonus points for Oenone. Midway through the stage is a category one climb, that climbs to 900m, but the rest of the stage is fairly flat.
