Today was the Firenze (Florence) - Modena race over 167km, crossing the Appenine mountains at the Abetone Pass. For the AIS Mapei Aqua Australian team, Chris Sutton, James Meadley, Simon Clarke, Sean Finning, Matt Goss, Matt Rex and Nic Sanderson participated and Johnny Clarke rode for his Bibanese, Italian club.

Chris Sutton, James Meadley and Matt Goss went in an early break of 13 riders after 25km. This group formed the basis of the front group from which came all the final victors. Two Italian riders, Guidi and Genovese, crossed the Abertone with a lead which they were able to hold to the finish. Johnny Clarke came in alone in 6th while Chris Sutton beat his group just behind Johnny to run 7th, with James Meadley running 16th.
