T-Mobile sweeps again as Health Net defends

The T-Mobile women's squad continues to dominate this year's Cascade Classic in commanding style. Today's sweep of the top 3 spots means they have won all four stages and look to be the favorites going into tomorrow's final stage, the Old Mill District Criterium.

It started on the 2nd lap of the 4 lap contest when last night's twilight criterium winner Ina Yoko Teutenberg (T-Mobile rolled off the front with Kele Hulser (Ford-Basis) and Stephanie Graeter (Webcor). After they had established a lead, Kori Seehafer (T-Mobile) attacked followed by Katheryn Curi (Webcor), Kimberly Baldwin (T-Mobile) and Kristin Armstrong (T-Mobile). After this chase group made contact it was to the advantage of the two Webcor ladies to try and move into 4th and 5th on GC so they started working with the T-Mobile women to grow the gap.

On the final trip up the climb race leader Kristin Armstrong made a move that could only be followed by her two T-Mobile teammates Seehafer and Baldwin and the three rolled across the line together with Baldwin taking the stage win and Seehafer moving into 3rd overall.

The men completed 6 laps of the same hilly 13.7 mile circuit around Awbrey Butte. The Navigators squad started the aggression early, sending two riders off the front only minutes into the race with Jittery Joe's and Sea Silver each getting one rider across to them. This move would prove to be short lived as Health Net went to the front and brought it back, but would set the tone for things to come. The first time up the finishing climb a group of 5 riders moved clear with three dangerous GC men in Jeff Louder (Navigators), Tim Johnson (Jittery Joe's), and Aaron Olson (Colavita - Sutter Homes). Also in the move were stage hunters Ian MacGregor (TIAA-CREF) and Bernard Van Ulden (Webcor). With Louder only 13 seconds down in GC at the start of the day and Olson and Johnson at 1:37 and 1:53 respectively, the break was very motivated to succeed.

Back in the pack Health Net was setting a hard tempo and kept the break in check at around a minute until about a lap and a half to go. It was at this point on the second to last time up the climb that the break began to come apart at the seams. Early on the climb Van Ulden popped and coming over the top it was evident that MacGregor was digging extremely deep to stay in contact. Then just over the top of the climb, Olson signaled the neutral support vehicle up for assistance. His rear derailleur cable had snapped and he was stuck in his 11 tooth cog. Not the best spot to be in with a steep climb between you and the finish. Luckily it happened just before a descent and the Shimano truck was able to speed ahead and have a bike ready for him a mile or so down the road. An expert bike change ensued and after a short chase Olson was back in the fray, but the damage had been done to the break's rythymn and with Health Net picking up steam to keep Moninger in yellow, it didn't look good for the leaders.

MacGregor eventually fell off the pace with half a lap to go and with the pack breathing down their necks, the break began to attack one another as first Tim Johnson, then Jeff Louder and finally Aaron Olson tried to get away solo in a last ditch effort for the stage win.

It all came back together though and as they started the final ascent it was Nathan O'Neil (Navigators) who made the first move. Moninger quickly covered it as he saw Cesar Grajales setting up to try and steal the leaders jersey that he only needed 11 seconds to seize. Moninger then took the bull by the horns and led out the sprint to the line just narrowly missing out on the stage win from a young Taylor Tolleson (Cal Giant-Village Peddler) in a photo finish.
