Plaza takes over with strong TT
Ruben Plaza (Comunidad Valenciana) has taken over the general classification of the Vuelta a Aragon after winning today's 11 km mountain time trial up to Virgen de la Sierra. Plaza put 20 seconds into Charles Wegelius (Liquigas-Bianchi) and 39 into Luis Perez (Cofidis), with the rest of the field losing more than a minute to the Spaniard. In the general classification, Perez is in second overall thanks to the 14 seconds he gained in a breakaway in stage 2.
The gradient of today's climb averaged around 5%, ascending 535 metres in 11.2 km. After a fairly flat first couple of kilometres, the climb steepened, and there were even sections of 16% in the final kilometres. Combined with this, the weather conditions were also bad, with wind, occasional snow flurries, and freezing temperatures.
Plaza rode steadily over the first 7 km, clocking 12'38 for the distance. That put him in second overall behind Luis Perez, who had registered 12'31. But in the final four kilometres, Plaza piled on the pressure and reversed the situation, taking 39 seconds out of Perez, with Wegelius also riding very well to move into second on the stage.
Jan Ullrich, riding his second stage race of the season, finished in a time of 25'53 to put him in the top 20. Ullrich was placed well at 7 km, but also faded in the final 4 km.
Tomorrow's fifth and last stage of the Vuelta a Aragon is from Borja to Illueca over 139 km, and includes the Cat. 1 Alto de Aguarón at 86 km.
