Local rider Colin Roshier (Team Quest - The Bike Shop) gained his first British Cycling championship title when he won the National Criterium Championship held at the cycle circuit in Minet Park, Hayes on Sunday 23rd May.

40 year old Roshier who works locally and races regularly at the circuit finally won the fast 80km event after his surprise attack saw him cross the line clear of his two former breakaway companions Greg Sandy (Alcan/Bianchi) and Rob Enslin Prestige (VC/Viner).

"I've won medals in time-trial championships before but this is the best thing I have won," said the rider from Staines in Middlesex: "It's only just sinking in that I will be able to wear the national champions jersey now when I race at Hillingdon every week. "

"I had got across to a group of riders who had escaped early in the race but the group was too big," he explained: "So I did what I normally do every week and put in a couple of moves to try to shake some of the riders off and it worked. Three of us got away with four laps to go and we worked hard because we knew that each of us would get a medal if we stayed clear. It was touch and go and on the last lap we just hesitated a little and I decided to take my chance just got the gap I needed."

Roshier has always had class was on the long-list for the British Olympic team in Seoul in 1988 when injury forced him to suspend his career for three years. He has raced purely for fun since he returned to the sport in 1990. The neo-veteran is also heading the British Cycling over-40's road race series having finished first and second in the first two events.
