CV-Kelme flexes its muscles
Valverde vaults into race lead in Murcia

Local Murcia man Alejandro Valverde and his CV-Kelme squad took it to Vuelta Murcia race leader Ivan Gutierrez today on the "Queen Stage" of the race. Valverde was a close second on the stage and managed to eke out a 5" lead to don the tunic of race leader atop Alto Collado Bermejo this afternoon. "I didn't know how it would turn out", a delighted Valverde told Spanish TV2, "but I had a great day today. But I couldn't have done it without my team. They made the difference."
All day, the familiar sight of the green stripes of the CV-Kelme pounded away behind the breakaways, making life tough for Gutierrez and his Illes Balears-Banesto squad. Italian Danilo DiLuca (Saeco) gained his first win of the season and accepted the Cima Pantani trophy from his director sportif Giuseppe Martinelli, who was Pantani's former team director and a close friend of the late Italian climber.

USPS-Berry Floor's Lance Armstrong had his toughest uphill test of the season on the hot, windy stage. Armstrong was with the leaders until the final 5 km, when he moderated his pace and tempoed to the top of Alto Collado Bermejo. "I was suffering today", a sunburned Armstrong told Cyclingnews post-stage. "They were going fast today."
His USPS-Berry Floor teammate Michael Barry seconded Lance's opinion, telling Cyclingnews that, "It was a tough course out there today." Barry ended up 27th at 5'12", while Armstrong was 36th at 6'12", dropping to 24th at 5'54". Lance's likely adversary in next July's Tour De France, Jan Ullrich, finished in the main group at 15'15" and is now 72nd at 24'18".
How it unfolded

108 riders took the start at 12:05 under a very warm, 30 degree sun and with the first GPM after 7.8 km on the Alto De la Santa, attacks went from the gun. A group of 26 riders got a gap and first over the top was Constantino Zaballa (Saunier-Duval). The group sat up after 12 km, setting up a perfect counter-attack by Marco Pinotti (Lampre). He soon had company as another big group of 21 got away, including his Lampre teammates Piccoli, Garate and Vila, Cabello, Pradera and Zaballa again.
On the day's second GPM after 48 km, Alto di Pilego, Zaballa took the points again ahead of Garate, while Illes Balears-Banesto and CV-Kelme were chasing 1'30" behind. Zaballa attacked out of the big break on the downhill and was joined by Torrent, Charteau, Vila, Blanco and Cunego. This sextet maintained their lead as the rest of the break was eventually absorbed by the peloton. After 83 km at the intermediate sprint in Totana, Torrent took the points with the peloton at 2'40".

With 92 km raced on Stage 5's third GPM, the break's advantage had increased to 4'45", where Zaballa once again took the points on the Alto de la Santa, this time ahead of Blanco. Saunier-Duval had done a great job to set things up for their pocket climber Leonardo Piepoli to make his move for the stage win on Alto Collado Bermejo. With Zaballa virtual leader, Illes Balears-Banesto and CV-Kelme had to work extra hard to bring the break back. After three hours across the tough terrain of the hinterlands of Murcia, the pace was fast with an average speed of 40.2 km/h.
The determined chase was working to bring the break back, as on the penultimate climb of the day after 132 km atop Alto di Pliego, Zaballa took the points again, but the frantic chase of CV-Kelme had closed the gap down to 3'42".
As the stage entered the final 25 km in Puente, with the final climb of Alto Collado Bermejo ahead, the lead of the break was down to 2'30" and falling as the chase reduced the peloton to 40 riders, who sucked up first Charteau and then Torrent from the break. CV-Kelme's Javier Pascual Rodriguez attacked and was joined by Elias (Relax-Bodysol), which caused a definitive junction between the some of the break and the remains of the chasing peloton.

As Zaballa, Santi Blanco and Cunego were caught, Saunier Duval launched Martin Perdiguero with Leonardo Piepoli and DiLuca, upping the pace and forcing both race leader Gutierrez and Lance Armstrong out the back for a moment. Cadel Evans, Valverde, Ruben Plaza joined the front group and as the road flattened out near the first part of the Alto Collado Bermejo, the both race leader Gutierrez and Lance Armstrong got back. Perdiguero went again with Petrov (Saeco) and Piepoli.
At the top of the 700m Alto di Espuna with 7 km. to, this trio had 10" on the chasers, but once CV-Kelme began to close the gap, the diminutive Piepoli made his move and flew the coop. As the shaven-headed Italian climber ascended towards Cima Pantani, he bore an uncanny resemblance to the late Pantani. With 4 km to go, Piepoli had 15" on the chasing group who caught Petrov and was led by Valverde, Perdiguero and Evans, while race leader Gutierrez was being towed by Colom, with Lance Armstrong right on his wheel.

Di Luca attacked with 3 km to go and was joined by Valverde, who was looking to pull 47" and take the race from Gutierrez. Evans bridged up and with 2 km left, Valverde was already 45" up on Gutierrez. With 1500 m to go, the fast moving trio had caught Piepoli and Valverde was now virtual leader on the road. Valverde continued to pound away on the front and increase his lead on Gutierrez. Di Luca sprinted in for the stage win atop Alto Collado Bermejo (Cima Pantani), with Valverde second ahead of Evans and Piepoli.
Race leader Gutierrez hung tough, but not tough enough and passed the finish 52" behind Valverde, losing the race lead to the talented Spaniard.
Stage 5 - March 7: Murcia-Murcia, 133 km
On this short stage with the Cat.3 Alto Cabezo De La Plata and the unrated climb of El Palmar 20 km from the finish, the last stage of the 2004 Vuelta Murcia could come down to a sprint, but perhaps without USPS-Berry Floor powerhouse Max Van Heeswijk. If that's the case, look for race leader Valverde to go for the sprint win in Murcia city.
