David John Tonks wins Hong Kong champs

By Roy Denoon

The Hong Kong National Road Race Championships were finally held following a last minute, and unexplained, rescheduling from their more normal February date. The Bride's Pool Road course in the New Territories consisted of between 2 and 4 laps of a 15 km circuit, with two major climbs and descents making up the majority of each lap. As usual in Hong Kong, the race was one of attrition.

The Elite A race was won in convincing style by former Great Britain international John Tonks (Velocity). Tonks attacked on the second climb of the day following the capture of the early break of eventual silver medallist Leung Chi Hang (Velocity), last year's Masters 30-39 champion Roy Denoon (CMS)/Marco Polo) and youth rider Chui Chi Sek (Velocity). After Tonks quickly opened a gap, the bunch never really settled into a sustained chase, this perhaps being partially due to the mixture of categories riding together. Tonks then soloed to victory with the fight for the minor medals being settled in a sprint between Leung and Yung Wai Lok (CMS)/Marco Polo), Denoon's last lap effort being caught on the final climb to the line.

The Masters 30-39 and 40-44 categories were won by Eric Koh and Hung Chung Yam (Velocity) respectively, both riders having impressively stayed with the leading Elite A bunch to the finish of the 3rd lap. Similarly, the first and second places in the Youth 14-16 category, Szeto Hin Leung (Velocity) and Luk Chun Yue (SCAA) sprinted out their race just in front of the Elite A pack. The Junior category saw a emphatic win by Kwong Siu Yin (SCAA). As usual, some of the most competitive racing, and the trickest kit, was to be seen in the MTB and city bike categories with wins by Yu Yiu Yan and Leung Chi Yin.
