Hondo beats Cooke in first stage battle

A strong finish by German Danilo Hondo (Gerolsteiner) has given him the victory and the overall lead in the Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde. In a downhill sprint into Zottegem, Hondo beat Australian Baden Cooke (FDJeux.com) with American George Hincapie (US Postal-Berry Floor) making a solid return to racing with third place. The three were part of a 20 man group that escaped on the Leberg with 12 km to go, with the main peloton finishing at 41 seconds down.
Hondo won this very same stage in 2001, and knew that it was important to be up the front for the last two climbs. "With my win I've shown that the team has done a good job," he said. "That is important. It was difficult. No team wanted to ride and then Steffen Wesemann took off. But I knew the finishing zone well and that played to my advantage."
"With the leader's jersey the overall victory becomes a target. Then I have to survive the tough stage on Wednesday."
How it unfolded

The first stage from Middelkerke to Zottegem was run in beautiful sunny spring weather with a moderate easterly wind blowing. The riders had a headwind for the first 100 kilometres or so of the stage, but that didn't stop 24 year old Frederik Willems (Vlaanderen-T Interim) from trying a solo move after only 12 km. Willems was allowed to ride clear and spent most of the 196 kilometres of the stage in front, reaching a maximum lead of 18 minutes, but when he reached the three finishing circuits around Zottegem, his lead began to fall.
Willems almost survived until the last 30 km lap, but the attacks had started in the peloton and his five minute plus advantage vanished to nothing by the top of the Berendries. Hungarian Laszlo Bodrogi counter attacked, passing the finish line with 10 seconds lead over Marco Serpellini (Gerolsteiner), with the peloton led by Lotto-Domo another 10 seconds behind. A lull in the speed allowed Bodrogi to gain 45 seconds lead with 20 km to go, but then Lampre started riding hard on the front.
Bodrogi survived until the 2 km Haaghoek cobbled section with 14 km to go, before he was swallowed by the charging peloton. Shortly afterwards, the narrow but not overly difficult climb of the Leberg saw three riders go clear: Luca Paolini (Quick.Step), Leif Hoste (Lotto-Domo) and Juan Antonio Flecha (Fassa Bortolo). Several more groups of riders jumped across and by the top of the climb there were 20 riders with 18 seconds lead to the peloton.

Besides Paolini, Hoste and Flecha, the group contained Hondo (Gerolsteiner), Cooke (FDJeux.com), Hincapie, Stijn Devolder and Rydel Hesjedal (USPS-Berry Floor), Leon Van Bon (Lotto-Domo), David Clinger (Domina Vacanze), Gerben Löwik (Jacques), Marcus Ljungqvist and local boy Scott Sunderland (Alessio-Bianchi), Lorenzo Bernucci (Landbouwkrediet-Colnago), Steffen Wesemann (T-Mobile), Bert Grabsch (Phonak), Xavier Florencio (Relax-Bodysol), Fabian Cancellara (Fassa Bortolo), Romans Vainsteins (Lampre), and Marc Wauters (Rabobank).
Nearly all the major teams, save for perhaps CSC and MrBookmaker were represented, and the break quickly gained time on the Berendries, where Dave Clinger powered up in front. With 9 km of riding left, the attacks were frequent, but no-one was able to get away. Steffen Wesemann tried to surprise everyone with a solo flyer in the last kilometre, but he was swallowed up with 200m to go as Hondo drove the sprint down Leonce Roelsstraat to win ahead of Cooke and Hincapie.
Hondo and his team will have to defend the jersey in a long stage tomorrow between Zottegem and Koksijde/Oostduinkerke, measuring 237 km. The stage is mostly flat and the wind should assist the riders.
Bad crash for Skelde
Danish rider Michael Skelde crashed on the first run in to Zottegem after approximately 120 km. He was taken to the nearby hospital and placed under intensive care, as he sustained heavy concussion and two hairline fractures of one of his vertebrae. He is wearing a collar around his neck and his head is bandaged. He is expected to remain in hospital for three to four days.
Another Alessio rider who fell was Martin Hvastija, who had to get three stitches in his eyebrow, although he did finish the stage. X-rays showed that he had no fractures, even though he hurt his collarbone.
