Gasparre wins with late attack

Italian Graziano Gasparre has won the first half stage of the Settimana Coppi & Bartali after attacking with one kilometre to go in the 84 km stage. Gasparre finished just ahead of Crescenzo d'Amore (Acqua e Sapone) and Marlon Perez (Colombia - Selle Italia) as a bunch sprint unfolded behind him. It was his first stage win in two years.
The race was marked by a fall after 30 km, which involved several riders including Scarponi and Caucchioli. The latter was taken to hospital in Riccione where it was determined that he had broken his collarbone in two places.
