Stage 5 - June 8: Porabka - Zar, 96 km

Young Italian triumphs in Poland

By Grzesiek Kaczmarzyk

Italian national team rider Tatiana Guderzo won the 7th Eko Tour after the final stage of the biggest women's race in Poland turned out to be the most important. The young Italian was first to the top of the Zar mountain (810 m) ahead of Maja Wloszczowska (Polish MTB team) and Bogumila Matusiak (MKS Start Peugeot Lublin). This was also the final order of the general classification.

The first two stages in the tour were flat and the whole peloton came to the finish line together. Italian track specialist Giorgia Bronzini won twice - in Wloclawek and then in Piotrkow Trybunalski - ahead of experienced German Tania Hennes.

On the third day the riders had a tough race - an individual time trial on the hilly route in Lazy. Three years ago the Polish championships took place on this 16 kilometre circuit with the ascent of the Stodolsko mountain (1.2 km at 7%). The most decorated Polish cyclist (22 gold medals in the national championships) Bogumila Matusiak won this stage, but German track specialist Anke Wichmann (second in the ITT) took the yellow jersey. In the afternoon on the same route, the next stage took place. Italian Noemi Cantele was alone in the lead for three (of the seven) laps, but the peloton caught her in the last kilometres. On the finish line Bronzini overtook the 2000 World Champion, Bielorussian Zinaida Stahurskaya.

The last stage was only 96 kilometres, but it included five tough climbs. The riders had to climb the Kocierska pass (710 m) twice and the Wielka Puszcza (570 m) twice. At the end of the stage, they rode to the top of Zar mountain (7 km at 8%). Guderzo, the silver medalist at the Junior World TT Championship in Zolder and the fourth placed on GC after stage 4, attacked on the third ascent. Young Polish MTB rider Maja Wloszczowska, the World MTB Marathon Champion, joined the Italian. They cooperated well and the distance between them and the main group grew bigger and bigger.

On the final climb, Wloszczowska tried to distance Guderzo, but she didn't manage and the Italian won the stage and the whole race. "She was very strong," the Pole said about her Italian rival.

For Wloszczowska this race was a kind of preparation for the MTB cross country at the Olympic Games in Athens. "I am surprised with my results," she said, because it was just the second race like this for her.

Matusiak, the favourite for victory in the Eko Tour only finished third. "I concentrated on following the leader and I disregarded Guderzo's attack," Matusiak admitted.
