19th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.3Canada, June 15-20, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 4 - June 18: Saint-Georges/Mont-Mégantic, 155 kmPolish teams take control on Mont MéganticRomanik wins stage; Brozyna remains on topBy Mark Zalewski The Action ATI team of race leader Tomasz Brozyna and the Hoop CCC Polsat team of Radoslaw Romanik continued to control the 19th Cycliste de Beauce today -- all the way to the top of Mont Mégantic, rising 600 meters over the final eight kilometres. Entering today's stage, only nine riders were within one minute of Brozyna, making the task of defending the yellow jersey much easier for him and his teammates. The likely suspects to mount a challenge among the nine leaders were Colavita Olive Oil's Nathan O'Neilll down 25 seconds, Health Net's climber Scott Moninger at 26 seconds and Capec's Maxim Iglinskiy, back 39 seconds. "It was a typical Mont Mégantic stage," said Colavita Director Chad Davis. "We tried to set-up O'Neilll [today] by sticking with Health Net and the Polish teams. Action and CCC Polsat have been working together all week long." And after the typical "Beauce Break" was reeled in, it was Action ATI and CCC Polsat on the front the rest of the day. At the top, it was a reverse of the overall with Romanik taking the win in front of the yellow jersey of Brozyna. Scott Moninger stayed with the two leaders, with help from his teammate Mike Jones, coming in three seconds behind for third. Iglinskiy and O'Neill managed to limit their losses, losing 17 and 26 seconds respectively. With O'Neilll still inside one minute to the leader, Davis is confident that the former Australian time trial champion can make up significant ground in tomorrow's time trial. "[Nathan] is much faster than Romanik, and he can pass him and Scott [Moninger]." O'Neilll even has a new TT bike from Felt, painted in the yellow and green to compliment Mark McCormack's stars and stripes national champion road machine. O'Neilll will be riding Mavic wheels, a change for him from previous years. The switch in wheels and a motivating paint job could launch him a few spots up on the overall classification, making for an interesting final stage on Sunday. How it unfolded More than 1,100 meters of climbing awaited the 83-man peloton today, with the finish sure to separate the contenders from the pretenders. In true Beauce fashion, a group of five riders left the comfort of the pack to have a go on the early climbs, including: Vassili Davidenko (Navigators Insurance), Linus Gerdemann (Winfix Arnolds), Tyler Wren (Colavita Olive Oil), Svein Tuft (Symmetrics) and Bruno Langlois (Volkswagon Trek). This group gained nearly 2:30 on the field. "We sent Tyler up the road to cover the early move," said Chad Davis. "Then we let him sit up and come back." After the first major climb of the day, only three breakaway riders remained: Davidenko, Tuft and Langlios. This trio had 5:15 into the peloton as they approached the second climb of Mont Morne. This was the biggest gap Health Net and the two Polish teams were going to allow. After Morne the gap began to fall. After the climb is was 4:40 -- and as the Action ATI team drove the peloton the gap came down to under four minutes. Through the village of Marston the gap was 3:30, and it was clear the break would be reeled in well before the final ascent to the top of Mégantic. Past Lake Mégantic the trio dangled in front with Action ATI just waiting to pull the string. With 20 km to go the pace quickened even more. Near the base of the final climb, the remaining three were caught and the race immediately began to shatter over the final eight kilometres. 15 riders set the pace up Mégantic -- then 10 -- then six. But Nathan O'Neilll wasn't in the first 15. "Nathan jumped across to Moninger in the final six," Chad Davis explained. The two then rode with Romanik, Mike Jones (Health Net), Iglinskiy, Romanik and Brozyna. But as the grade increased, it was Romanik, Brozyna and Moninger with the strongest legs. Romanik crossed the line ahead of Brozyna, with Moninger holding on for third.
