19th GP Cycliste de Beauce - 2.3Canada, June 15-20, 2004Main Page Results Previous Stage Next Stage Stage 3 - June 17: Lac-Etchemin/Lac-Etchemin, 180 kmCharles Dionne wins at homeBrozyna and leaders rest easyBy Mark Zalewski Another day at the Cycliste de Beauce and another large break. However, with the leaders more than seventeen minutes ahead of the rest, the peloton had little to be worried about. The Action-ATI team, led by the yellow and white classification jerseys, took their position at the front today while thirteen riders went after the stage win. Three significant climbs and numerous rolling hills helped to shave the original break of thirteen down to four, and then to two before Charles Dionne (Canadian National Team) pulled away from Kairat Baigudinov (Capec). The overall classification changed very little with Tomasz Brozyna (Action-ATI) in yellow and Viktor Rapinski (Navigators Insurance) and Radoslaw Romanik (Hoops CCC Polsat) twenty seconds behind. How it unfoldedAnother 180 km stage greeted the small field of 83 riders this morning, and after just 10 km a group of non-threatening riders made a jump and put twenty seconds on the field. TIAA-CREF Team Director Jonathan Vaughters wanted one of his U23 riders in this break, after what happened in the previous stage, and Dan Bowman was his man. "Dan is a strong rider, but he's a former mountain biker and still kind of rides like it," Vaughters explained. "He is still kind of hesitant and doesn't know when to attack, but he is getting the hang of it." So when attacks started flying off the front of the race early, Vaughters got on the radio to his rider. "I saw a hill ahead and knew it was the last good place to bridge, so I got on the radio and yelled for Dan to go -- and he went across." The pack seemed to chase hard at first, but the break was working well together over the grueling rolling hills for which Beauce is both revered and feared. Eventually the Action-ATI team set the pace, looking to keep the gap to the breakaway reasonable. With the peloton rolling along the gap increased, cresting at more than nine minutes as the leaders ascended the climb between St. Philemon and St. Magloire. Mark Walters (Navigators Insurance) took the KOM points over this climb with Charles Dionne in second. The gap was still more than seven minutes with the major climbs finished, and Action-ATI sat on the front content. Knowing that they were home-free, the break members began attacking each other trying to improve their individual odds of taking the stage win. Gord Fraser (Health Net/Maxxis), Plamen Stoyanov (Hoop CCC PolSat), Charles Dionne (Canadian National Team) and Kairat Baigudinov (CAPEC) surged ahead with 30 km to the finish. Out of this selection, Dionne and Baigudinov dropped the other two with just 2 km of road remaining to use for a match sprint. To the line it was the speedy young Canadian winning handily. Fraser and Stoyanov rolled in thirty seconds later, with the rest of the breakaway two or more minutes behind. A peloton of about 40 riders came through the finish 9:19 after Dionne, but with no significant changes in the overall occurring. Tomorrow's mountain-top finish on Mount Mégantic boasts a course profile that would make any Fortune 500 CEO drool, but that should make the remaining riders quake in their boots. However, with 3,600 feet of overall climbing, the finish should see lots of attacks from the likes of Health Net's Scott Moninger. But with two teammates in the top twelve, Action-ATI's Tomasz Brozyna will have plenty of help keep his double digit lead into Saturday's Individual Time Trial.
