Stage 7 - July 15: Shorewood Criterium

McCook and Pic copy day three

By Kristy Scrymgeour

Dave McCook (McGuire) and Tina Pic (Genesis Scuba) repeated day three of superweek when they won their respective races at Shorewood today. Pic's consistent results have her leading the women's America's Dairyland leaders jersey and the Nicole Reinhart sprint jersey after five days of racing for the women. In the men's series Carlos Vargas (Endeavour) keeps his leaders jersey for yet another day.

The women were off first with 60 kilometers of racing around a four-corner course in suburban Milwaukee. The main straight was wide open and lined with people and café's and most importantly an Australian Pie shop. The back straight was quite rough and bumpy over broken up pavement.

Starting on the attack was Rebecca Anderson (America's Dairyland) whose very early move on lap won instigated a fast race. Every lap was strung out for the women and the pace was kept high primarily by Suzanne Sonye (Helen's/ Trek VW) and the Genesis team. Attacks were frequent but not much was sticking and primes and mid race sprints helped keep the race in tact. Pic won the three sprints of the day to earn the sprinters jersey to go along with her leaders jersey. Later, a break started by Keri Soraci (TDS) got a good gap and when caught was countered by four riders who stayed out there for a lap before being reeled back in. With three laps to go the pack was still together and with Sonye setting a very high pace. Sonye won the prime with two laps to go and kept going on the front with the Genesis team ready to lead out Pic.

Eventually as the race rounded the final corner; Pic was in the lead and held of the rest of the bunch to take the sprint convincingly. Magen Long (Sportsbook.com) took second followed by Christina DeKraay (Fuji) who has been consistent all week and currently sits third in the series standings.

In the men's race the pace was very high on the fast course and a break of eight riders formed and stayed away to fight it out amongst themselves. In the break were Jonas Carney (Jelly Belly), Andrew Crater (Monex), Frank Dierking (ABD), Frank Pipp (Endeavour), Aaron Olsen (Colavita Olive Oil), McCook, David Fuentes (Morgan Stanley) and one of the Aussies from MGZT.

After keeping the break away from a hard chasing peloton, the last lap caused a clash within the break and Fuentes and the Aussie both came out of it with a flat tyre, leaving only six riders to sprint for the win. McCook took the sprint convincingly from Carney with Crater finishing in third place. Taking the bunch sprint for seventh place was Harm Jansen (Helen's/Trek VW) who sits in second place in the overall series. Fuentes had bad luck in the finish of today's stage, but he walked away keeping the sprint jersey on his back going into day seven of Superweek.
