Even though the overall and sprint classification winners had been decided at the Downer Avenue race on Saturday evening, one more stage victory was still on the line. Many of the bigger names at this year's Superweek already had one win, or more, including names like Jansen, Ventura, McCook, Carney, Sayers. The Whitefish Bay criterium would be the final chance for someone new to make their mark on Superweek, and Nick Reistad (Endeavour Cycling Team) made the most of the opportunity.

"I've been racing here for six years, so I know the course pretty well," Reistad explained. The rider for the strong amateur Endeavour team was hoping to get his team their first win at this year's Superweek, with his teammate Carlos Vargas secure in his second overall position. But coming into the final race, the least likely to be able to step up was Reistad. "I was just chilling out in the back because I was violently ill yesterday -- food poisioning, some bad Italian. (laughs) I wasn't even sure how well I would do today."

Bad Italian food aside, Endeavour set out early to break the race apart, with Frank Pipp, last year's sprint winner and one who always seems to find the breaks, drove hard at the front of the field. Harm Jansen (Helen's RPM) also wanted to finish Superweek on a high note, and hung it out on front with Pipp. "I really wanted the race tonight, and I think you saw that from the beginning," said Jansen. "There's a lot of people that come out there, and I think it's great for the sport to show that you are on it whenever you can. Even though I had the overall wrapped up, I tried to get away, but it's very difficult."

Many smaller breaks dangled off the front from lap to lap, but not much stuck. The pace was not exactly blistering either, which is a testament to how tired these riders were after seventeen days of continuous racing. Even after taking a week off in the middle of the series, veteran Superweek racer Robbie Ventura (US Postal Service p/b Berry Floor) had used up much of his energy winning Kenosha and making the winning break at Downer Avenue. "I finally wore out today at the end, I was just tired."

Still, Ventura and nine other riders finally got away from the rest with about twenty laps to go. The large crowds sitting on the grassy median of Santa Monica Boulevard cheered their favorite riders on, many of whom had made this selection. Jonas Carney and Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly p/b Aramark) were two favorites, along with sprinter Frank Pipp (Endeavour), Dutch rider Jimmy Hansen (Glud & Marstrand Horsens) and Australian Brad Edmunds (Team MGZT).

But ten riders was a little too slow for some of the riders, and a group of four took matters into their own hands. "There were quite a few guys in there," Reistad explained. "I had a teammate, Frank Pipp, in there -- two of the Jelly Belly guys. And for some reason it just split split apart, and it ended up being the four of us. We got a really good rhythm going."

The four included Reistad, Edmunds, Hansen and, of course, Ventura. All but Edmunds had ample experience racing here, including the Dane Jimmy Hansen. " I raced here in 1999 -- I raced on the Saturn team with Robbie [Ventura]."

The final four continued to work well together, driving the pace high, as the rest of the break filtered back to the field. With three laps to go, the four were still working together, and everyone knew that Ventura would be the favorite in a sprint to the line, including his breakaway companions. At the same time, overall leader Harm Jansen took a surprising flyer off the front of the pack. "I knew I couldn't bridge it, but I just wanted to show [the fans] that I had good legs! There's a lot of people that come out here, and I think it's great for the sport to show that you are on it whenever you can. "

"Everybody was pulling, and at the end, they were kind of watching me, so I just said 'Just go, Nick!' and that was all she wrote." Coming around the final turn on the second-to-last lap, Reistad jumped, with Ventura giving his friend encouragement. "I know Robbie pretty well and that he's one of the best sprinters in the country," Reistad said. "I didn't want to go up against him in a head to head sprint. I went hard when I saw the opportunity, and luckily no one chased me, because if they had caught me I would have been done."

Reistad spent everything for one final time around the course, and had enough left over for the now ceremonial Superweek punch of the finish banner for his first ever Pro/1/2 category win at Superweek. Jimmy Hansen wanted someone to attack Ventura, and thought he had enough to catch a solo attack, but ran out of road in the end. "I knew I had to watch [Ventura], and I did, but somebody else went away and won the race. (laughs) That's the shame about cycling, that's how it works. For me, I wanted somebody to go away, because it would put the pressure on Robbie and the Australian, and we almost caught him, but he had a big gap, and second is ok!"

Behind the break, the 'Flying Dutchman' Harm Jansen was still surviving on his solo attempt, and came across the line with his fist in the air, putting a close to a long seventeen days of hard fought racing. "I love coming out here -- if I come back I am not going to go for the overall, I'll just go for the individual stage wins. The team really loves it, and you can see the crowds are getting bigger. Same with the bike riders, once they discover Superweek, I think it's one of the greatest races they have here in the U.S. by far."
