Jaksche and CSC conquer Mont Faron
Peloton subdued by news of Pantani's death

Team CSC rose to the occasion in Sunday's team time trial finale of the Tour Méditerranéen, fulfilling its plan of placing German Jörg Jaksche on the top step of the podium. Despite pre-race illness and a crash early in the race, Jaksche rode exceptionally throughout the five stage event, and together with teammates Ivan Basso, Jens Voigt stamped his authority on the climb of the Mont Faron. Double stage winner Baden Cooke took home the points jersey, while CSC wrapped up the team prize after its podium sweep.
"I was ill before the race and I actually had my doubts as to whether I'd be able to start," Jaksche explained. "But the form was there and the team has worked together perfectly all week for this to happen. Today we were very strong and I'm proud to win my first race ever at Team CSC where I feel that I fit in really well."
Jaksche has proven his talent as a support rider for former ONCE team leader Joseba Beloki, but today's win marks his first 'full' win as a professional, after taking the young rider's jersey at the 1998 Bayern Rundfahrt.
A minute of silence was observed at the finish of Sunday's stage (editor's note: being a time trial stage, the entire peloton was not present when the first team set off), a tribute to Italian Giro d'Italia and Tour de France winner Marco Pantani, found dead the previous afternoon at the age of 34. The news cast a dark cloud over the Tour Med finale, as riders tried to comprehend the news. Mario Cipollini, who claimed his first victory of the new season Saturday afternoon, was just one of the many riders devastated by Pantani's tragic death.
"It took a special kind of motivation to ride today on top of such tragic news about Pantani," CSC director Bjarne Riis commented. "I advised the riders to focus on the job at hand and use their frustration to go faster, out of respect for Pantani and the sport.
"We rode this stage to perfection," Riis added. "The riders followed the tactics down to the last detail and on the climb they were simply outstanding. This victory is an important one, which provides us with morale for the tasks ahead."
