Stage 3 - February 20: Lagoa-Lagos, 180 km
Garrido flies in Lagos

The presence of a 940m climb did not prevent the third stage of the Volta AO Algarve from ending in another bunch sprint. This time it was Argentinean Martin Garrido (Barbot-Gaia) who succeeded in winning ahead of Stuart O'Grady (Cofidis) and race leader Candido Barbosa (LA Pecol). Thus Barbosa kept his lead, with 9 seconds advantage over Alberto Benito (Antarte) and 13 seconds back to O'Grady. The majority of the field, including favourite Lance Armstrong, is at 25 seconds.
The 180 km stage between Lagoa and Lagos was characterised by the Cat. 2 climb of Foia (940m, km 57) and a Cat. 3 climb at 122 km. With the main climb coming so early in the stage, it was not expected to break the race open. After 8 kilometres, a break of three riders: Jérôme Bernard (RAGT Semences), Ricardo Costa (Wurth/BOM Petisto) and Alberto Lopez de Munain (Euskaltel-Euskadi) escaped and got clear of the peloton.

The climbing in the first part of the stage was too much for Bernard, and after 30 km, Lopez de Munain and Costa had a 1 minute advantage over the Frenchman and 5'19 to the peloton. Costa took the points on the mist covered climb of Foia (km 57) ahead of Lopez de Munain, with Rabobank's Joost Posthuma leading the next group over for third place 3'20 behind the leaders. The peloton followed at 5'30, with US Postal prominent in front.
Posthuma's group, which also contained Adrian Palomares (Carvalhelhos-Boavista), Pedro Martins (Barbot-Gaia), Jordi Berenguer (Beppi-Ovarense) and Sjef De Wilde (Jong Vlaanderen 2016) made little progress on the two leaders, and after 93 km they were 4'30 behind Lopez de Munain and Costa, with the peloton now at 7'30 from the leaders. Unfortunately after 105 km, the two leaders went off course and completely lost their advantage, with Posthuma's group now taking the stage lead. The former leaders were absorbed by the peloton at the 112 km mark.

As Milaneza-Maia took control of the pace in the peloton, Posthuma attacked his breakaway companions, taking full points on the Cat. 3 climb at km 122 and thus the mountains jersey at the end of the day. The Rabobank rider still had over four minutes lead with 40 km to go, but was caught with 17 km to go. Aketza Peña (Euskaltel-Euskadi) made the first counter attack, followed by his teammate Iker Camano, the pair joining together and working desperately to try and stay ahead of the pack. But it was to no avail in the end, and the peloton sped into Lagos for the third bunch sprint in three days. It was Martin Garrido's turn to prevail this time over the improving O'Grady and the ever present Barbosa.
Tomorrow's fourth stage will be the much anticipated 24 kilometre time trial between Vila Real S.Antonio and Tavira. Lance Armstrong will be the man to watch, testing out his new position and equipment. Look out for O'Grady as well, who is no slouch against the clock, not forgetting Barbosa, who won this race in 2002.
