The third day of Britain's longest bicycle race saw the remaining 87 riders complete the two part stage at Goodwood. Based at the Goodwood motor racing circuit, the riders took on a single lap (2.4 miles) individual time trial in the morning before setting out on an 84.3 mile road race which took them to the top of the South Downs seven times during the afternoon.

In damp, drizzly weather, the time trial was won by Andrew Roche (Isle of Man) in 4 minutes 45 seconds, with Neil Coleman just 5 seconds slower but still quick enough to retain his race leader's yellow jersey.

The road race started with the 8-man strong Prestige VC team controlling the pace of the bunch so as to enable their man, Duncan Urqhart, to consolidate his position as the 'green jersey' points leader as he took maximum points at each of the 'hot spot sprints' on the motor circuit before the race led out onto the public roads.

By the first ascent of the long Halnakar Hill, the front of the bunch had begun to break up as a succession of attacks came from riders from different teams. By the second ascent a leading group of nine riders had established itself in the lead. Two laps later, a second group of eight riders bridged to the front as they came onto the shorter 'inner' circuit leading up to the prime 'King of the Mountains' sprint at Pilley Green Lodge.

This larger group worked together to extend the gap from the main bunch to more than two minutes although, when the race returned for a final five-lap stint on the motor race circuit, this gap was greatly reduced by concerted work from the front of the followers, in particular by race leader, Neil Coleman, who had been closely marked throughout the early stages but who by now wished to see the gap reduced as much as possible. A crash on the, by now wet and slippery, surface of the penultimate corner nearly spelled trouble for Coleman as some 20 riders came down around him. Fortunately he was unscathed and finished the stage still retaining the yellow jersey, just a few seconds ahead of Anthony Malarczyk (Wales).

In a close sprint from the front group, the stage was won by Tim Barry (Team Munster) from Ben Greenwood (Recycling.co.uk), with Andy Lyons (Parrot Print RT) third. Urqhart retains the Sprints Jersey and National Elite MTB Champion Jody Crawforth (Evans RT) now wears the King of the Mountains jersey.

Tomorrow sees the race move to Ardingly where the course is described as 'nothing steep but definitely wearing' with 'in some places the road surfaces are not brilliant'. So after the cobble-like potholes and gravel of yesterday's circuit at Newdigate, it seems as though the riders are in for another exciting ride.
