Junior & espoir crits close out Park City Cycling Festival

Zach Taylor rides to a thrilling victory in the men's 17-18 criterium

By Keri Fagan, USA Cycling

The Park City Cycling Festival came to a close Sunday with beautiful weather for the remaining junior and espoir criteriums. The course made it difficult for riders to get away due to the soft corners and the sweeping descent on the backside, but this did not stop the riders from making attack after attack for some very exciting racing this afternoon.

The first race of the morning was the 15-16 women. Lauren Shirock (Emmaus, Pa.) broke away early on, but the field reeled her back in. Toward the end, Jacquelyn Crowell (Maitland, Fla.) broke off to form a respectable distance between herself and the rest of the group, and Shirock once again attacked and tried to bridge the gap. She was unable to catch Crowell however, earning the silver medal. The sprint for the bronze medal was between Cindy Lakatosh (Trexlertown, Pa.), Ashley Ooley (Fort Collins, Colo.), and Amara Boursaw (Stanwood, Wash.), with Lakatosh taking the honor. Ooley and Boursaw rounded out the podium spots.

The 17-18 women toed the line next for a thriller that resulted in a field sprint for the finish. Racing began at a very fast pace, as the first lap was a minute faster than the previous field. Shannon Koch was the first to attack, but the girls regrouped quickly. Despite the attempts of several riders to get away, the race ended in a thrilling sprint for the victory, with Lauren Trull (Greensboro, N.C.) taking top honors. It was Kimberly Geist (Emmaus, Pa.) and Cassandra Osorio-McKenna (Worcester, Mass.) who took the silver and bronze medals, while Kelli Williams (Hollywood, Fla.) and Sarah Levy (Centennial, Colo.) secured the final two podium spots.

In the men's 15-16 race, there was a breakaway attempt with six laps to go, but with the entire field chasing, it did not last for long. The final lap saw many riders get tangled up in the corner leaving the start/finish area. A large pack came into sight to sprint for the finish, and it was Bo Randolph (Steamboat Springs, Colo.) that claimed victory, while Tejay Van Garderen (Missoula, Mont.) barely missed a third national championship and took the silver. Andy Cornelison (Carlisle, Iowa) secured the bronze, while Justin Williams (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Kevin Soller (Breckenridge, Colo.) rounded out the podium in fourth and fifth respectively.

The men's 17-18 race was by far the most exciting race of the day, as four riders broke off the front early on and formed an admirable gap. It was Ryan Keels (Austin, Texas), Mike Schmidt (Salt Lake City, Utah), Zach Taylor (Marietta, Ga.), and Daniel Holloway (Morgan Hill, Calif.) that worked together and set the pace. The field chased hard, but not hard enough. Several riders made respectable attempts to bridge the gap, but there was no catching the foursome. Zach Taylor attacked and went off the front of the lead group with three laps to go, obviously determined to take the win. As strong as Keels, Holloway, and Schmidt were, there was no catching what the announcers called the "Zach attack." Taylor came in to a cheering crowd for the victory. He was followed in second by Keels, and in third by Holloway. Mike Schmidt secured fourth place, while Eric Riggs (Antelope, Calif.) took fifth.

The final race of the Park City Cycling Festival was the Espoir women. Securing the top spot on the podium after 20km race was Megan Esmond (Orlando, Fla.). Lauren Franges (Barto, Pa.) took the silver, while Magen Long (Oklahoma City, Okla.) took the bronze.
