Race 1 - April 28: Walterboro criterium, 50 miles

Haedo continues good form

By Kristy Scrymgeour

Juan Jose Haedo (Colavita Olive Oil) backed up his podium place at the final stage of Tour de Georgia, by taking out day one of the Heritage Series in South Carolina today. A strong field was on the start line in Walterboro for the start of what could become known as the post Tour de Georgia crits.

At the mid way mark of the 50 lap race, a group of 16 riders went of the front, which contained riders from almost every team. The break quickly gained a minute on the field, a gap which it held for the remainder of the race. In the break were four Health Net riders, John Lieswyn, Hayden Godfrey, Tyler Farrar and Brice Jones as well as Eric Wohlberg and Ben Jaques-Maynes (Sierra Nevada), Haedo and Gustavo Artacho (Colavita Oilve Oil), Gordon McCauley and Andy Crater (Monex), Chad Hartley (Jittery Joe's), Alex Candelario (Jelly Belly), Marty Nothstein (Navigators), Garavito Diego (OLP Racing), Scott Zwizanski (Ofoto/Lombardi Sports) and Dave Fuentes (McGuire Cycling).

At the ten kilometers to go mark the break split and a group of four went of the front. Candelario and Nothstein were determined not to let the break get away, however and it was quicly reeled in, only to be countered by a group of five. This group of five containing Wohlberg, Lieswyn, Haedo, Zwizanski and McCauley had the horsepower to stay away and lapped the field five laps before the finish.

With a few laps to go a crash took out Swizanski leaving only four of the original break to contest the sprint. Approaching the finish line, Health Net drove the pace to lead out Lieswyn, but Haedo came around to take the win, with Lieswyn taking second and McCauley third.

Tomorrow the Heritage Series continues in Greenwood.
