Stage 7 - September 10: Mende - Valréas, 173 km
Edaleine times it right, Martinez keeps control
As the Tour de l'Avenir continues to wind its way south, another aggressive day of racing was on order between Mende and Valréas. The 173km parcours gradually dropped down from the Massif Central, but not without three categorised climbs and a rolling route to keep the riders busy. After attacks throughout the day's race, Jean Delatour's Christophe Edaleine emerged victorious with a well-timed move in the closing 10km, while overall leader Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) kept his grip on the general classification.
From the drop of the flag the attacks began, but the fast-paced peloton continually pulled back the would-be escapees. On the day's first climb, the Cat. 4 Col des Tribes, Team Barloworld's Freddy Bichot continued his run of aggressive performances by forcing the pace and trying to create a selection. Nobody could gain much of an advance on the climb, but the descent proved equally appropriate for the attackers, and Bichot moved clear with Yves Delarue (BigMat), Eric Leblacher and Christophe Le Mevel (both Crédit Agricole), and Benoît Vaugrenard (FDJeux.com), with James Vanlandschoot (Vlaanderen T-Interim) and Cédric Coutouly (French national team) chasing behind. Thus a group of seven was formed, which opened up a small gap on the main field.
On the Cat. 3 Col du Mas de l'Ayre, the leaders' advantage was beginning to fall, and Vaugrenard and Delarue were dropped and the remaining five pressed on ahead of the peloton. They were joined by two more riders, and with 50 kilometres to race the advantage grew once more to over a minute.
Race leader Martinez demonstrated his strength once more by taking responsibility for the chase. The lead group suffered a setback as Lequatre (who had bridged across) and Coutouly crashed, and the peloton was quickly in striking distance of the five remaining riders up front. With 30km to go, Martinez had the race back together, and still continued to push the pace, causing several splits in the field.
A new group seized the opportunity to break clear ahead of the day's final intermediate sprint, including Jonas Ljungblad (Swedish national team), Thomas Voeckler (Brioches La Boulangère), Christophe Edaleine, and Philippe Gilbert (FDJeux.com). This was to prove the decisive move of the day, quickly gaining 30" on the main field.
Gilbert and Voeckler tried to break clear within 10km of the finish in Valréas, but they couldn't maintain their efforts long enough, and it was Edaleine who countered with the reserves necessary to go clear for the win, winning by 16" ahead of Voeckler. Yellow jersey Martinez came home in a group just 38" behind the winner, while the damage in the remainder of the field was evident, and groups continued to straggle in as much as 27 minutes behind Edaleine.
