Stage 1 - May 16: New Haven Criteriums, 2 x 30km

The opening stage of the Tour of Connecticut was split into two criteriums in New Haven today. In a kind of extended prologue, the fastest race would determine the wearer of the leader's jersey going into stage 2, the other would award the sprint title.

Both stages went to Saturn sprinters, with Eric Wohlberg holding off a hard-charging bunch in the finale of the first race, and Ivan Dominguez taking the second.

As the first race drew to a close, Wohlberg was off the front in a break with Chris Baldwin (Navigators) and the bunch was closing fast. Believing they were about to be swamped, Baldwin sat up, but Canadian speedster Wohlberg gave it one last mighty kick to stay away from the bunch and cross the line first.

As evening grew darker in New Haven, the second race was marred by a crash that caused the organisers to shorten the distance by 15 laps. Riders were told "two to go" and after those two laps Ivan Dominguez beat out Gord Fraser for the win.

The breakaway-powered first heat was the fastest, putting Wohlberg into the leader jersey for tomorrow's second stage, a 100km circuit race on a 7km city course in Waterbury.
