Voigt Takes the Stars and Stripes for Snow Valley

By Kristy Scrymgeour

Mike Voigt (Snow Valley) demonstrated his superior power today winning the Elite National Championships in Seven Springs, Pennsylvania with a gutsy move that could be matched by nobody. Voigt new to Snow Valley Cycling team has had an impressive year to date and was very happy to have improved on his ninth position in last years Nationals.

On a course so challenging that the women's race, held earlier in the day, was totally ripped to pieces, the men were not shy in giving it a go. Attacks began on lap one of the four lap 173km course with Ronald Schmeer (WA Saturn of Seattle) taking the first chance. Scott Zwizanski (Spring City, PA), Russell Langley (Washington D.C.), Doug Ollerensha (Corvalis), Mike Dietrich (Florida Frutta) and many other all had their turns in small breaks but it was a later break that made the grade.

Eventually with Schmeer and Calvan Allan (Upland, CA Broadmark) away, Voigt showed impressive strength and endurance as he caught the two and went right by soloing to the finish line to take his first National Championship title. Behind, Adam Bergman (MN Bianchi) took the silver medal ahead of Steve Cate (Mathis Brothers).
