Stage 5 - June 8: Mortegliano-Mortegliano, 156 km

Australian Team Report

By Brian Stephens, AIS U23 manager

The last stage of the Giro Friuli included a short, very steep climb at the 60 km mark and a flat run to the finish whish should have been at 158km but ended up being 173km as we did an extra lap of the finish.

A group including the overall leader Pidgornyy, went clear on the climb and was never caught. For us, Ashley Hutchinson was dropped on the climb and lost so much time that he withdrew. Lee Godfrey also withdrew close to the finish suffering from diarrhoea. Bruce McIntosh and Peter Dawson just finished in the main bunch.

Maksym Rudenko from Podenzana won the stage with Ruslan Pidgornyy taking 3rd place and the tour win comfortably. 2nd was Alessandro Ballan.
